Hi,
I have an MZ-N510 which I would like to use for basic recordings. This MD player only has a Line-in and not a mic in, so when I use my Sony ECM-MS907 I get poor results. Would it be better to pick up a cheap MD recorder with a mic in off ebay (like MZ-n10, MZ-H700, MZ-r900) or buy a portable mic preamp to use on my existing MD recorder?
Thnks
My feelings are it would probably be just as cheap to buy an MZ-N10 off eBay, as to buy a quality pre-amp. And it gives you flexibility - you could use the MZ-N10 just on its own, or as a pre-amp into the MZ-N510, which might give you more overall analogue gain and hence perhaps more detail in your sound. Depends a bit what you want to record. I use my MZ-N10 sometimes on its own, and sometimes as a pre-amp into an iRiver, which combo works well.

I use the mic input of my MD to any number of microphones with great results.
In my opinion, the quality of the mic input on the MD is superior to the microphone input of my Dell (no surprise) and the microphone input of my Audigy2ZS notebook sound card (that was a surprise) - but not better than my Mackie 1202 (we have to draw the line somewhere).

wouldn't it create a lot of noise
No, you put the MZ-N10 into record mode but paused, and it'll stay like that indefinitely, no disk movement or anything. Not much battery drain either.
I keep a "blank" disk available for use when using MD as pre-amp. (You have to have a disk in the unit).

Holy busted MDs... Thanks Mike - I have a gravity-poisoned Sony MZ-R37... the only thing it's good for is listening to SP standard MDs or erasing any Minidisk (due to its injury - you can wipe any data on any disk anytime... by simply pressing record... not pretty.)
But now I realize it's got one more cool attribute - a mic preamp for my DELL... swell!!!
