hi...
i make paintings and recently installations...
i am just beginning to use sound.
in my last project i used the sound of hundreds of people, singing the syllable OM together, within their own vocal range.
this had a calming effect - i think the different frequencies of the sound included and dampened any external or 'other' noise.
i have read about white, pink, violet noise, etc.
reading about them, i imagine them to be similar to the ohm sound, but they sound quite harsh, which is contrary to my purpose.
is there such a thing as a 'gentle' white/pink/// noise, which will have a similar dampening effect?
a sort of humming silence...
thanks so much,
oisin.
i'll have a play.
edit: had a play and i couldn't get it to sound gentle!
Two ideas; use "brown noise" (which sounds like low pitched pink noise) or put a short sample of your "Ohm" recording in the freesound archive. This would allow those of us inclined to this sort of thing to sample it as a model for a convolution or vocoding program in essense creating a filter to put noise of various colours through. Think of it as tuned noise.
Check in the archive in another day or so for a sound called LOWBROWN. I came up with it after reading your post. The problem interested me.
Coincidentally I have just uploaded a couple sounds of waterfalls, which have similar qualities to white/pink noise, but I find water is much less harsh than actual "mathimatical" noise. I will report back here when they are available for download. In the meantime, I'm sure there are lots of river/stream/water samples around here.
EDIT:
Well that was fast:

HOLD EVERYTHING!
I have white noise that isn't very harsh sounding uploaded! One second!
NEVERMIND!
But I can upload some by tomorrow, fear not, fine lemon, I will return with gentle white noise! I guaruntee 100% satisfaction!
OKAY!
I made a good one should be up by tomorrow! ;D
BY THE WAY!
I almost forgot, I actually HAVE a vocoder installed. I got it just a little while ago, now I'm going to use it! Thanksfor reminding me, Blanket-thingy!
thanks so much, you guys...
this place is something special
something really special...
thank you so much
all of the sounds are really spot on:
the water makes even the fastness (like the coming at you of water) of white noise more gentle
the brown noise can be almost imperceptible (or can dissappear like a hum), and then when it stops your ears ring...
the 'gentle white noise' is so strong yet so soft. it has this undulating presence, (which the om singers also have, because there are constantly people stopping and starting singing.)
its so lovely that you all responded.
the sculptural piece that this sound is to issue from is still to be fully completed, so i will have to try different sounds out properly, with the piece, to see which makes the right athmosphere.
sound is so vast and amazing. i am so lucky to have happened upon this site and hope i can learn more.
i will endeavor to make a sample of the ohm recording today, and post it. i think it's a really amazing sound.
thanks again,
love,
oisin.
