Does anyone have a loop i could use for the drone of a bagpipe, or a good VST? Even my X-Fi MIDI synth isn't up to the job of the bagpipe's tambre, and I would really love to be able to finnish this piece I'm working on right now.
I've done many live bagpipe recordings both solo and large 30+ pipe bands, but I need to know a few things:
1. You want ONLY the drone correct? (No chanter or actual notes)
2. Does it have to be totally dry, or can you accept some reverberant space in the sound?
3. How long will the loop be sustained? (This will simply help me know how well the loop must sound after longish periods, rather than something which will only be used for a handful of iterations at any given time)
Let me know and I can probably find something in my recordings. The sooner the better, as I will have some work to find the specific file that will give me the loop required.
Update: Ok, I found some, but I also found you almost never get a piper playing nothing but drones except while one is tuning, and even then usually you are playing a note to make sure the entire instrument is together. Therefore, the only samples I've found so far are at the very beginning of playing and they are usually not that long. For this reason, the so-called loops are too short to give a nice long circular breathing effect. I'm about to upload three of them anyway, but see what you can make them do and if they will suit your purpose. I'll post the links once they have been approved.
I might be able to talk my boss into coming into the studio for an afternoon and do a 2-3 minute deal on the drones alone, but i don't know exactly when that could be done. I suppose if I bring in more than few Guinness then it will get done quicker. I've been meaning to do that anyway to see what the new Live Room really sounds like!

Let me know if they end up being usable. Despite whether they are required for this project, if my solo piper comes to record at the studio I will post some specific samples in any case.
Take care.
