Hiya! Well, most of the monster/dragon roars I've found on the internet could scare the stripes off a zebra and I'm trying to find a more friendly one for a children's play I'm directing. It has to sound like a dragon, or a large beast, but...well...friendly and exciting. Anyone know of any...or want to take on the challenge of making one?
There's a "bellow" one on this site that's pretty good, but it's short. Our dragon's bellow needs to sound as if he takes a big breath and lets out an it's-a-great-day-to-be-alive kinda roar. I guess...a Mr. Rogers type dragon, if you will.
just a suggestion:
if you're searching for this sound hard (ie online sfx libraries that you pay per sound), let me recommend to you that you will not find much success searching dragons. it's some sort of mammel, maybe a pig, maybe a bear, lion etc.
if you're into portable recording or know someone that is, i would send them off to the zoo to find your sound.
just trying to help
Thanks. I'll keep looking with those sounds in mind. But I'm open to other suggestions, too. I live rather far from the nearest zoo. Again, thank much!
what about a lion cup sound?
try your movie rental store...maybe they have a movie with dragons and then you could record a good sample from that...I remember a movie or was it a series with a baby-dragon? sorry cant remember. Otherwhise I know of a game called "spyro" which is about a little friendly dragon, but I dunno of he makes that roaring sound that you're looking for or if he just speaks
Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea.

There is probably a copyright on those sounds, so you would be stealing :-/Anton
Indeed and normally I wouldnt have made such a sugestion, but it is for a children's play...I mean come on! I think some tolerance should be allowed in certain cases...copyrights sometimes go too far, beyond protecting the author.
So anyway, yes be warned and use it at own risk. But people, let's stay realistic, how harmfull can the use of a sample for one 3-seconds sound-effect in a children's play be?...it's not like we never break the law (never exceeded the speeding limits?). (I know that's a louzy argument, but still...)
I guess no one is up to the challenge of getting a firld recording of an actual dragon so... I'm working on a dragon sound right now.... will upload tonight! I'll put it in my mangled voices sample pack with "dragon" in the file name. I heard they are very dificult to record anyway...
Ok... check out my "DRAGON" sample pack when it is moderated and added. Did about 10 variations so hopefully some will be more friendly than others. Tried not to sound too evil while still keeping it realistic (?). No cats were harmed in the making of this sample pack.

some of them sound quite scary though

Give the poor dragon a chance... he's really friendly once you get past the fire breathing... Hopefully 1 of them will be ok... wouldn't want to frighten the little kids...
Excellent, I liked the 'hiss' one best.
NoiseCollector, you are a DOLL!!! Thank you so much. I'm going to tinker with them right now. I'll let you know how the play goes.
