Here is some randomly regurgitated mumblings on finding free sounds for sampling and other odd practices of sound mutilation. If you are looking for links to free samples, sorry. If you like collecting sounds like I do or just want to hear something unique, this might be useful. Beware, it's not spell checked and has no links whatsoever, it does give you all you need to find just about any sound you will ever need for free, that is not on here of course. It might even help you use the search engine on here better though! Read on...
The Art of Noise Collecting: Where to Find Free Sounds for Audio Production

That's a great post NC - you have put a lot into this so thank you.
Like you I have made and collected thousands of sounds - about 250gigs to date!.
You mention the Jonestown thing - Ifor those who have not heard it have had that recording for a long time, listened once and never since. It is the most disturbing and most powerful recording I have ever heard and has much more impact than the documentaries I have seen on the subject because somehow being sound alone it draws you into the nightmare. From the point of view of sound freaks like many here it is a salient reminder of how powerful sound can be as in the seductive propaganda or mind controlling voices of charismatic despots and cult leaders like Jim Jones. Scary stuff.
On a different level the Jonestown recording - if it is the same one - illustrates the complexity of copyright issues. My understanding of the position is that it was found by a local policeman at the scene. Somehow his son got to make a copy and it found its way to freedom from there. So it is now IN EFFECT in the public domain but who knows if the police own rights, or even the person, presumably now a very dead cult member, who recorded it or of course their estate.
Anyway - great stuff NC.
I really enjoyed reading your post, that was awesome. This is my first post to this site, and yours is the 1st article I've read. What a way to get started! I'm a guitar player who has 'backed into' the world of electronic music by playing guitar along with dj's, and computer noise junkies. So...I've started writing my own stuff with bleeps and blips, and an am having a blast. Your tips are the greatest help I could have ever asked for to get going.
Thanks!!
Just read your article (yeah, rather late, I know) and have to agree with others here that this is a very good read. Like you, I like collecting sounds and there are many useful tips here. To trade sounds for sounds with websites is a very interesting option I have so far never considered (because I couldn't think of it!) and that is very useful. Thanks for writing it!

very interresting, in deed. I am very touched to find people that share the same passion.
There is another way to find sounds, it's to collect it yourself. It's a good trill. I have been collecting sounds for more than ten years. Original stuff.
It's always good to keep that in mind. After all, Small Digital Recorders are very accessible now. It was not the case before...
Thanks to all for the kind words, I am glad it helps in finding sounds. I know that sometime when I come across that gem of a sample it's like finding a musical crack rock in the carpet fibers, good times! I am buidling an outline in my head for a sequel, maybe I'll post it in the next few days, I'll let you know when I do.
Cheers... the show
