I'm an artist based in the UK, conducting PhD research into the condition (philosophical, theoretical) of works of art whilst they are on display. As part of my research I have been collecting the ambient sounds of galleries and museums. Unfortunately I am unable to go everywhere, and so, if anyone has the urge, I would welcome any field-recordings of gallery ambience/atmosphere. At least one minute's duration, date, place, information about space, works in room etc. is ideal, but anything un-ideal is also fine. Top of my wish list is the Museum of Modern Art in New York, but any and every museum or gallery, no matter how well-known, is of interest.
I've uploaded a few examples of my own recordings. I'm new to these things and would welcome any suggestions as to how to improve recordings. Presently I use a Sharp Minidisc recorder and a Sony ECM-DS70P mic, or an iPod with a Belkin TuneTalk stereo mic adaptor. I use no editing/mixing software, but am open to suggestions - I use a Mac.
Many thanks,
Andrew McNiven
here they are
1-bienal arte SP, 1 MD, recorded with sonny mdmzr50 and mic-emc-907, about 600mb
2-also found 1-md recorded at Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, 2006 (let me take a better hearing at this one)
how can i send it/them to you, if case of interest?
The search tool is handy: ambiance + exhibition will yield a bunch of samples by digifish and something by myself. And if you search museum + paintings will get a good set of samples by LG.
There should be also some more in my vocal pack, search for hall + my username , then browse results. Hope this helps.

I'd like to thank everyone for their considered and helpful responses - unfortunately I'm rushing to get ready for a trip to Amsterdam, and need to get organised for this, but I hope to respond to each of you properly when I get back on Wednesday. In the meantime, some sense of my research and the ideas I'm working with might be gleaned from here:
