Hello everyone, I'd like to start a discussion on explosion sounds.
They fasinate me because some are very unique. And I have a question, what goes into making a good explosion sound?
I know you start with the basic boring pop sound. Then what would you add next to sweeten the sound?
Does anybody know any good techniques on creating unique explosion sounds?
Or any good effects to add to the sound (obliviously low end, EQ) but what else?
Or has anyone read anything on making good explosion sounds.
Links would be helpful to read. And i just want to clarify I want to know how to make explosion sounds, not find them. A speedy response will be helpful.
Thanks
well I'd guess an explosion is made of several parts
the initial ignition or attack part - if you want aggressive then I guess you should start thinking physco-acoustically - a snarl of a dog - a snakes hiss as it strikes..
the rumble - try random things slowed down- part of a train pass - a lion roar - of course the easiest way would be to put it into a sampler - I think reason is a terrific sound design tool - put any sound into sampler - slow it down add distortion...
Get a keybpard with faders on it - whisk them in real time - the idea is to make dramatic changes - use pieces of those...
Explosions can be big - so they will have an echo component - I was walking around berlin in my heels and it's amazing how clear the reverb can be just from shoes! -imagine the echo if a bomb was dropped - Have you ever seen a fireworks display?
the final part would be debris... is this is how you control perspective?
what is this for?
Hey thanks for the valuable information.
And thanks for the quick reply.
This is for nothing, I just want to make more unique and powerful explosion sounds than just pulling the sounds from librarys.
Does anyone else have any techniques or ideas.
that's ok - maybe you would get more love if you shared a little?
put a little in to get some back? Can see you have not added any sounds at all!
well - freesound is about sharing information and sounds
I'm guessing you have made some sounds?
it would be nice if you could put some up wouldn't it?
it says gridiron sounds added 0
seems clear to me - sorry if I brought it up in an abrupt fashion
yes you did bring it up in an ubrupt fashion. And what you taking about has nothing to do with my topic. I post sounds when I want to. And I would not be asking for help on making sounds if I had made my own, So yes I did not create my own sounds. So I appreciate your help, but if your done helping then please do not post anymore random replys.
I'm not saying he doesn't have a good point. He does.
But the purpose of my post was to start a discussion on the creation of explosion sounds.
Like I said in my previous post i have not created sounds yet for posting. Which is why I'm asking for techniques on explosion sounds.
I am not going to upload my sounds from sound librarys, that i paid for, that would be illegal. Thats why companies charge for the sounds so you can buy them. If i started posting companies sounds, Thats like putting up new release bootleg movies, Which is a whole another discussion. I want to create my own sounds for posting.
I have no interest in creating a long arguement on posting sounds. I have respect for all fresounders.
But again martin I appreciate your help.
I was trying to get a disscusion going that I had a question on and I'm sure many others do to. My post is some what of an information guide that I'd like to start on Explosions.
Thanks.
Try using some C4, then have a shotgun mic at a distance where it won't distort
On a serious note though,
I have tried this before, but not really pursued it. What I tried out was bashing some things in our celar, and having the mic a little too close so that it distorts a little. The cellar was good because of the reverb tail, which IS important. Also think what your blowing up - if it's a building your going to need rubble landing etc.. If you haven't got access to a mic, then try playing with noise generators, envelopes and EQ, and maybe some pitch shifting.
Anyhow, asides from martians point, you have not made any suggestions of how to do this yourself....
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, if it's an explosion in space you can get away with it being silent
Just to add to martians arguement.....
Griddy, according to your response to the BIOSTEAM gig you suggested that you are a good sound designer. So are you just paranoid of people stealing your work or selfish?
after gridirons "explosive" outburst i wasn't going to say anything.. I guess I feel a little burnt after being lectured on my netiquette - REAL glad I took the time to respond and share a technique I have used on many films.
Is that anyway to talk to people who have helped you - Do you have any idea about etiquette? Obviously not -
or basic manners? How about " I don't have any sounds I'm happy with right now but perhaps after playing with my sampler I might put a few experiments up so you guys can comment or help me make better....
That would be a better way to start any discussion on sound...
Sonic sculptor pointed out Grid's other posts...
Hmmm - He DOES say he is a good sound designer - so must have designed something? - or You have never designed sound... HMMMM????
has many requests - for nearly 3 months. And yet no contribution ???
I'm thru wasting any more of my time with the impolite and ungrateful
