I am not even certain the best way to describe the sound is as I have it in the subject.
Let me paint the picture, and hopefully someone can provide the adequate sound.
An elevator is dropping and the safety cables catch it. I am looking for the sound that those high-tension cables make when they are pulled tight. Its that almost "electric" sound they make.
Maybe if someone knows the correct term I wouldn't even need the a new sound, but as of now, I am turning up nothing. Your help is GREATLY appreciated.
Try doing a search for
TENSION CABLE WAV,
TENSION CABLE STRETCHING WAV,
TENSION CABLE STRESS WAV,
STEEL CABLE WAV,
STEEL CABLE STRESS WAV,
STEEL TENSION WAV,
STEEL TENSION STRESS WAV,
STEEL CABLE STRETCHING WAV,
Also a good source for sounds is your movie collection .
Now I'm not sure that the exact sound that your looking for is in this but in the last Bruce Willis Die Hard film there is a scene where he falls through some sort of shaft with an SUV and it gets caught on some steel cables that are trying to hold the car's weight [at least I think they were cables] and its making this tension stretching kind of sound.
If it has the sound but you don't know how to extract the sound let me know and I will show you.
this is very unethical and shouldn't be done. The sound created in the movie belongs to someone. Someone owns that sound and ripping it off the dvd is basicly stealing. (please refer to FBI warning) ADAMSTRANGE i hope none of the sounds you have posted here are under copyright. It could get you into big trouble.
I haven't posted any sounds here and sounds that I get from my film collection [which I can't count],my 5000 and counting vinyl collection and Computer Music and Future Music free sample dvds get mixed and processed together to make a totally new and unique sound.
If your making a track or film for your own personnel use then I gave you a starting point as to where to find what your looking for.
If you know how to mix and mutate existing sounds then you have nothing to worry about.
IF you recognize the early works of the Chemical Brothers and the Dust Brothers, they tell you outright that they created most of their tracks from records...other peoples records.
I personally know this.
And they never got permission to use them and their record label knew that...why ?
Because they manipulated those sounds into totally new and unique sounds to the point that you could no longer recognize what the original source sounded like...and thats exactly what I do.
I also outright extract sounds from movies and either use them as is or process them for use in my game mods which of course,I don't sell.
By the way if you didn't know this, the way the laws are written and the technology that follows them not only is ridiculous, but they are also down right stupid.
Mind you I am against pirating since I am a Music Producer but I will bet that you, those here on the Freesound site and most likely anyone who ever reads this has,is and will still be breaking copyright laws.
If you have ever owned a VCR and recorded a TV show or movie with it,you broke the law.
If you have ever owned a record album and recorded it to cassette, you broke the law.
If you have ever DJ'ed at a club and been paid for it [like I have] ,you broke the law.
If you have ever made a mixed tape or CD,you broke the law.
If you own a Video Tape collection of movies and shows [like I do],you broke the law.
If you record a song or a movie on any kind of media and then take that over to a friends house and invite people over to enjoy it, you are breaking the law.
And if you own a DVD recorder or have a cable service that allows your to record a movie or TV show, you are breaking the law.
Now if you think I'm making this up,read the label on a vinyl record and read it REALLY CAREFULLY and think about all those tapes that you and your friends use to listen and share...if your at least in your 30's.
And if your recording your favorite TV shows from your cable box using a VCR,DVD or Digital Cable Service, then read what it says at then end of the show or movie that your recording and READ IT VERY CAREFULLY.
In the 90's when this issue was raised, the major broadcast networks developed a system that allowed a user to open their TV Guide and look at their favorite show or movie and right beside it was a unque number right next to this program.
The user then inputs this number code into their VCR to record their show and VCR companies ran out and build tens of thousands of these units.
What do you think all these people were doing with these units ?
I have a massive Video Tape and DVD collection thats so big I could start my own movie network and I got it from taping and burning from my cable service.
I understand what you mean about unethical but our laws are not written on the basis of ethics but on the basis of profit.
Years ago when the copying of the CD started,SONY came out with a technology that would not allow a person to copy CD's and this would have saved SONY MUSIC and other record companies millions of bucks.
Phillips on the other hand being the developers of the CD took it to court and had it shutdown.
The result was that everyone and their mother started copying CD's and SONY and other major labels began losing millons of dollars [they still made millions in profit but it could have been more were it not for Phillips].
The slap in the face came when Phillips released the Dual CD Burner and that made perfect copies of most commercial CD's.
Unethical ? HELL YEAH.
Did the government do anything about it ? HELL NO.
If they did, they would have outlawed CD Burners as well as the DVD Burners that we have now.
I truly doubt that after this your going to throw away any of your recorders or any mixed tapes or CD's that were given to you or you made .
By the way, I think I broke the law again about 2 hours ago...I recorded Terminator: The Sarah Conners Chronicles on my cable box.
Well, aside from taking the line out from the DVD player and putting it in the line in on the computer, is there another way to record the audio from a DVD? I would guess that a file recorded directly within the computer would not only sound better, but also not require me to move the DVD player over to my computer. Is there free software that accomplishes this?
I am fairly certain you have the right idea of the sound I am looking for. The only other problem I foresee is the fact that there is musical scoring layered over all the sounds in a DVD, and I do not have the software or the time to go through and cut all the music out.
Recording media for your own personal use is one thing. It is in fact to my knowledge legal to make backup copies of your own dvd's and cd's to other media. This is why dvd and cd writers are available to consumers. I think in BPENMAN's case he is looking to use this sample in a commercial project. That is where the line is drawn. Whoever did the recording for the dvd (or any other kind of media) owns the rights to that recording. Sometimes in the case of a label or major film the record label or publishing studio will retain the rights to the work. Here are a couple cases where copyrights have come back to bite people in the past:

ADAMSTRANGE - I see your list of ways to break copyright laws, just because people get away with it doesn't make it right. If I were you I would hope that the wrong person doesn't read about your illegal copyright breaking escapades clearly stated by you above.
Open your Audio Editor .
Now I guess your using a PC because if your using a Mac I would not know how to set this up.
At the bottom of your TaskBar you should have an icon of a speaker.right click on it and select OPEN VOLUME CONTROL.
Select OPTIONS,then select RECORDING.
You should see several Volume Controls with boxes next to them.
If you have one that says "WHAT YOU HEAR" or "MASTER", select that.
If your using Goldwave go to FILE and select NEW.
You will get a box that says NEW SOUND.
Make sure that it says STEREO,44100 and set the Preset to DAT QUALITY 30 MINUTES.
Take the DVD out of the player and put it into your Computer and let it play.
Hit the red record button on Goldwave and you should see the waveform in the display as it is recording the sound.
Once you record what you want you can go and edit it.
If it has music or vocals over it then there is nothing that you can do but to use a good EQ plugin .
There are audio ripper tools which are freeware to rip sound from a DVD but I would never use this because they will rip ALL of the audio and then your going to have to sit there and listen to an entire film's soundtrack just to find a sound which not only is time consuming but really boring.
If you use a software media player like WMP,JETAUDIO ,WINAMP REALMEDIA PLAYER , you can sit there and fast forward the scenes to find what your looking for.
I've trained myself to watch movies and not only enjoy what I'm watching but at the same time to listen intently to the sound to see what I can use.
Since my cable box is connected to my DVD burner,if I hear an interesting sound I just rewind the film or commercial, stick in a blank DVD+RW and record the sound.
Let me know which Audio Editor that your using.
if you own a digital recorder you can connect it to the earphone output of tv, dvd player or pc and record the audio. I'm not expert in audio tech, so I don't know if there could be any electrical trouble - I had none.
I use this technique to record and study the music I like, not for illegal business. it's only c u l t u r e.
culture is not a business - corporations made it a business. adamstrange said it so clear: market has no ethic. market runs so furiously blind searching for profit that it can obtain laws to protect copyrights while selling machines to ignore and bypass copyrights. Freesound using CClicenses is an example of placing the culture back in the hands of people, where ethic and copyright takes different meanings.
I think the type of sound your looking for is called a guy wire.
You might want to try to find one in your area, there everywhere a telephone pole is. There those cables that go from the pole to the ground. You can try to record one. Thats actually the sound they used to create the sound of a starwars laser but of course with alot of processing.
Gridiron's idea sound like it has some promise. These types of wires are perfect for creating the high tension cable sounds. Try and bring your own large cable to smack it with or maybe a simple hammer may do. The star wars people used a hammer I think. This is a much better solution than STEALING sounds from a commercial dvd!!!
adamstrange: I am using adobe soundbooth beta, I will have to play around with it to see if I can figure it out, but it sounds pretty straightforward... can I borrow your movie collection? I don't really have any dvds that I could find the sound in.
cajo: I do not have a digital recorder, or a decent condenser mic for that matter
Gridiron: I have several problems with your solution - none of which are your fault. #1 read my reply to cajo. #2 The city I live in thought it would be nice to bury all the power, telephone, utility lines underground and I don't have many guy wires to test around here. #3 the guy wires that I have tried are all too tight or too long (not sure which) because while it does make the laser sound like in starwars, there is no bouncing of the sound like I would like it to do... though I wonder what it would sound like with an echo layered on top... oh well, back to #1. If you feel inclined to go record that for me, I would be eternally grateful and your best buddy on here (I know, thats not very valuable).
ejfortin: read my reply to Gridiron and also i am not too worried about taking the sound from a commercial DVD - it will be modified and will not be the exact sound from the dvd, and then will be layered with a sequence of other sounds.
I REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S WILLINGNESS TO HELP! YOU'RE ALL AWESOME.
Even modifying an original sound is technically illegal. I know you think it might be hard to tell, but beware, it has happened before!!!! If they do find out be sure they will be coming after you. The reason you can use the sounds on Freesound is because the author who holds the rights has given expressed permission for you to do so. Even then you must give adequate credit to the creator of the sound. In your case you are trying to extract a sound which no permission was given for you to do so. Someone holds the rights to those sounds, and if it were me who's sounds you were using rest assured I would be pursuing the matter legally. If you would have asked for permissions for the sounds I would have no problem giving permission, but extracting them without permission is wrong. Please refer to the creative commons license located at http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/legal.php There is a reason Freesound has this license you must sign, otherwise anyone could put anything up here that they wanted.
Eric Fortin
Erm, can I just point out that you will want to record at 48KHz not 44.1.
If you really need to know how to rip the sound from a dvd you can do so by using Replay Music, it has a free trial, and it can do what you need. No need for recording through inputs or microphones, just takes the stream from the dvd and records it to a file on your hard drive. You will need some type of dvd playing software on your computer like windvd or media player classic or something. Please do not use this recording in a commercial venture though. Recording for your own personal use is one thing but it is not right to use the sounds in a way that creates revenue for yourself or others.
Ok first off did I tell anyone to rip the sound and sell it as your own...NO.
Second thing is if anyone has a problem with me taking sounds from movies and using them in a game mod that is available for free then don't play the mods.
If a film company or publisher doesn't have anything better to do than to try to shutdown someone's website because they feature a mod thats using a few of there sounds [or appear to use] in some gamemod thats free then they are idiots.
Their time and money would be better spent in trying to to figure out how to stop the pirating of their films and music in which people are making millions from than some guy playing a game with their stuff.
and if it were me who's sounds you were using rest assured I would be pursuing the matter legally
I'm not knocking you or making light at what your saying but you have better be someone really big in the music or film business and with a hefty bank account to pursue someone for a sound, especially if you don't know if that person created the same sound from scratch.
If I take an explosion sound from your movie and layer it into a drum sound and use in a dance track and you hear it in a club, your going to have to:
Find the DJ
Hope that by the time you find him he hasn't played several more records to the point that he forgot what he played
Ask him the name of the song [ if he lets you in the booth].
Hope that the song was on vinyl and not off an MP3 on his drive [he may have 1000's of songs].
Hope that its a big selling song from a big record label [and not from some netlabel].
And definitely hope that its not off of a WhiteLabel record.
If you hear a movieline from your film or part of your vocal performance or melody sampled on a record is one thing, but to chase someone down for a gunshot, sonar ping or in our friends case,a elevator cable sound...man your also going to need a really desperate lawyer whos trying to find anyway to pay for his overdue alimony.
If I'm poor and someone's taking my sounds I'm going to have to find a probono lawyer and if I'm rich I have better things to now spend my time and money [like having fun] than to bother over a bunch of sounds...and thats if its only 1 person thats using them.
What are you going to do if it 10 or 20 people using those same sounds ?
Thats like the genius record artist [who I wont' mention his name] who tried to sue another artist for taking his drum machine sounds from one of his tracks.
I couldn't stop laughing when not only was it thrown out of court, but when the judge told him "IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM ,GO SUE ROLAND". if almost peed down my leg.
Here is another thing about sound.
I have a legal sampling CD called ROBOTS AND COMPUTERS and it features sounds that sound exactly like those use in most of Kraftwerks songs and albums.
Now if I take the same sound off the Vinyl and clean it up so pristine that it sounds like it ripped from a cd but Kraftwerk gave permission to use sounds ONLY from the sampling cd...how would they know which is the extracted cd sound and which is the vinyl recorded sound since I can make them both indistinguishable from one another ?
Their not going to pursue me for that sound and risk that not only is it not worth it but that with todays software and know how I could have recreated the same sound from scratch.
I have a track that I created using old analog like sounds and it sounds and feels exactly as if Kraftwerk made it.
And I didn't use any of their sounds from their vinyl records and have all the methods that I used as to how I made it sound that way.
I TOOK THIS FROM THE LINK YOU PROVIDED
And for musicians, or the indie musicians with consciences, we usually object to commercialization of our work. I mean, it really sucks to hear Air or Stereolab in a commercial. (It hurts more realizing that I've moved into a demographic to whom minivans are marketed.)Ok let me tell you this.
Who ever wrote this is a damn idiot thats buying goofy juice on sale.
I will tell that I am 1000 percent sure that the person who wrote this has never in his or her entire life EVER been homeless and sleeping on the street.
This is like those stupid brainless people that you see on Oprah or Dr Phil that say "I don't know who I am,I really need to find myself".
Hello...LOOK IN THE BLOODY MIRROR.
If you want to be able to pay your rent or mortgage, get yourself out of debt and or most importantly...feed your family, and Ford Motors wants to pay you a HHHUUGE amount of money to use your songs in their next car commercial, you have better do it.
Otherwise your fellow artists will be praising and applauding you for not selling out while you, your family members and your pet monkey chim chim walk from shelter to shelter trying to remember if Tuesday is meatloaf night.
Lets see how many of your band of brothers will be willing to house you and your tribe in the meantime.
