time to step in...
adamstrange/others: although you might practice ripping DVD's at home, we at freesound can't support this as you probably understand. We don't host illegal sounds, nor do we condone talking about how-to-illegally use sound (just like we don't condone links to ilegal sounds). HOWEVER, and this is an important one, if you take sounds from a copyrighted source and then change it so much it is no longer recognizable that's where the lines of legal and illegal begin to blur (and sometimes we like that blurry vision here at freesound: http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=19268 )
bpenman: I don't think a sound like that exists on freesound, but maybe a lot of sounds that kind of sound like it... I'm not sure how this kind of sound would be recorded (because I've only heard it in movies, never in real life!). Maybe try walking through http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/tagsViewSingle.php?id=83 ?

I am about to give up on the search. I am starting to think your right... I don't think it is a naturally occurring sound.
And you needn't worry, I would never use another artists copyrighted material without prior consent.

bpenman - you were trying to take the sound off a dvd so, why wouldn't we think you were going to use it? you said you were trying rip it how can you say you weren't trying to use it???
(Bram, I absolutely do not want to start a flame, but I needed to be sincere - I can't stand people sort of menacing with words like "this is very unethical...", "please refer to FBI warning", "It could get you into big trouble" and so on. I think nobody here deserve such critics)
I am currently working the sound design in the US. Me and my colleagues in the sound industry love to share our wealth of sounds, but what we decide not to share should be respected. A lot of times, the sound design work we work on here in the US is copyrighted by our employers right off the bat and the work we do can not be shared with the public. I have uploaded some of my own personal work i have done to pacify your request for some of my own samples. I was not being critical of bpenman when I was talking about him copying sounds from commercial dvd's I was merely telling him the consequences and ethics of doing so. If someone decides to take part in these illegal activities it is their own business, but if one my sounds were taken from a commercial project and used for commercial gain you can be sure that the copyright holder would come after the individual. As a matter of fact this situation has happened before with one of my previous employers. Someone used a clip from the commercial dvd and that person had charges brought against them. The FBI warning isn't just there to look pretty.
wow! ejfortin, now you have same uploads as me! fantastic, a competition instead of a flame! no irony, I really appreciated it: the best answer to my barking. sorry, I was a little rude - btw, I now understand why you worry so much about copyrights. anyway, imho Freesound/CommonCreative propose a different meaning of copyright - collaboration and ethic are the keys. we all have a chance to contribute to a new technologic/cultural/social landscape, intellectual property is a hot item, should be discussed by people too, not only in courts.
it was a rough way to meet, ejfortin: I hope we can meet again in Freesound, there' a lot to learn and to share.
Here are some that you might be able to manipulate:
An old piano twang

Fence twang--the twang is very soft toward the beginning of this field recording, but again, you may be able to manipulate it.

Stringed gourd
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=624
Rope and pully--might work well mixed in
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=40556
The metal fence sounds in this pack

Search terms were fence, wire, metal, twang. Again...all would need some manipulation and I dunno how to do that. Happy sound hunting!
