I'm searching for a particular sound, but I don't know what it's called. I hear it primarily in synthpop songs as the main "instrument."
I can't search for it, I don't know what it's called.
These are some examples of what I mean;

www.colony5.com/files/listen/Psyco%20Blonde.mp3
www.myspace.com/razedinblack - particularly Share this Poison
Note: These are .mp3, .mp3, and a link to myspace, all of which are provided by the band.
^^ Agreed. Sounds like a double or triple voice sawtooth played at a high octave. It can be crafted fairly easily by changing the amplitude envelope on your synthesizer. It should look like this: Attack=0 Decay=25-50 Sustain=0-25 Release=25-50. (Assuming that 0 is the minimum allowed and 100 is the maximum allowed)
It also might have a light reverb effect on it but that could just be the release time.
