Right, I'm looking for one particular type of sound and I haven't found it anywhere on the internet.
A deep bass sound that sounds like someone's just hit a huge drum and let it vibrate until it stops.
If you want an example of what I'm looking for, think of the opening shot of the dark knight, gotham city helicopter shot right after the fiery bat symbol. And you hear a HUGE BOOM... as if to say, this is where we are, this is what the film will be like from now on. Does anyone understand what I mean? I've heard it so many times in films and it adds such drama to the cinema experience. I'd just like to request it here.
Thanks
Tom
PS I know there are lots of deep bass sounds on this site already but they're not exactly what I'm looking for.
Those are often not one sound though. I will try to see if I have any, but what you can try, layer up a deep thud with reverb and low strings, like cello, on one note, possibly in octaves. You can try adding a slowed down cannon or gun firing for extra effect.
I just used exactly that sound on a film I am doing the sound post on at the moment. I went to see the dark night, and heard the sound you mentioned and realised it was exactly what I needed! I made it by using a deep, distant explosion which I further filtered. And some pink noise, which I filtered heavily, and started at the same time as the explosion, then faded out. This way you can make it ring on as long or short as you want.
Worked brilliantly for me.
