Hello there,

I'm currently looking for a big library of old/cheesy monophonic sounds effects from the 50s.
You know, those kinds of sounds that you can hear in old movies like "Wild Bunch", "Death wish", "Terminator (mono mix)", "Dirty Harry (mono mix)", "Duel (mono mix)" old cartoons (like "Bozo the Clown) or even old Disney movies.

I've managed to find some of the sounds effects, like the guns shot/ricochet SFX from "Wild Bunch" in the "Hannah Barbera" library, but a lot of them are still missing.
I've also managed to find the iconic sound effect of the 44 Magnum of Dirty Harry in a old game called "Kingpin Life of crime", but I would like to have the entire library of those old sounds effect used in movies from the 50s to the 90s.

I don't really like the "realistic" sounds effect, I prefer the cheesy sounds effect from back-then.

Do you know where I could get/buy this library?

Samples which infringe copyright are verboten on Freesound.
Dirty Harry / Terminator are 1970's 1980's : not old enough for copyright to have lapsed ...

archive.org has a lot of old American TV shows and movies that are out of copyright in the videos section. (Note that not everything there is in the public domain, check the licence for each item.)

The ‘boing’ sound used in a lot of old cartoons is something a lot of people want. If you search for ‘jaw harp’ you’ll find a lot of free boings on Freesound. There are also a lot of cheesy-sounding gunshots on here.

Here is another thought: take more modern, clean sounding effects and transform them into the 50s sound.
Find a modern recording of the sound you want and then apply the followin effects to it, in that sequence.

1) put the sound through a bandpass filter. Even better if you can create a bandpass from a highpass and a lowpass filters.
Set the high pass to cut anything below ~80Hz and highpass to cut anything above 8kHz. Use gentle slopes.

2) put the sound through a "valve" or "tube" saturation effect. Don't go crazy on the pre-gain or drive setting, just enough for the output to sound "nasal" and "like from an old speaker".
Might be nice if you can mix in a bit of low level noise/hiss into your sample before feeding to the tube saturation effect. Remember I said low level...

3) A tape emulator plugin would also work well here, if you can get one.

4) if you can get a speaker emulator, you can run the sound through it. But even if you don't. Should already sound pretty close.

If you don't have these effects already built-in in your DAW, you can find free VST plugins for each of the effects I have described.

However, I don't want to make my own cheesy sounds effect.
I would rather have the real mono sounds effect from the 50s.

This entire library of those old SFX must be somewhere.
For instance, a really recognizable cheesy ricochet sound effect is available on Amazon.com:

Also, about those sound effects, they were really in a lot movies / cartoons.

Again, for instance, in the 101 dalmatians (1961), you can hear the exact same horn sound effect of the Cruella De Vil car's in the movie "Sugarland Express" (1974).
Also, when Cruella is hitting the truck with her car, that's the same sound effect in Duel (1971), when the big truck is hitting the car of Dennis Weaver (at least, in the original mono mix of Duel).

Another example, the iconic 44 magnum SFX of Dirty Harry is also used in Death Wish 3, for the .475 Wildey Magnum of Bronson. This same sound is also used a lot in the Batman (1989) by Tim Burton.

There must be a library with all those old SFX from the 50s. I don't care if I have to pay for this library. In my opinion, those are the best sounds effects.

So, does anybody know where I could find a library with those sounds effect?
I'm still looking from them on Internet, but I can only find just crappy realistic sounds effect.

If that's still not quite right, you could maybe try adding original or lo-fi to the search terms and see if that doesn't bring back some better results.
