[SOLVED]
Hello ! This is my first post.
I'm kindly requesting a sound sample of thump or thud.
I'm looking for a type that is a heavy metallic and a single-shot, no reverberations.
I need it in this form as source for in-game sound.
I have found several samples, but they are either too "shallow", too noisy, have reverberations or not under CC / PD license.
If there no such samples available, then please write some directions how to make create such sound effect.
I will try to find examples on youtube and post them here.
Still nothing, there was one example as a background to a music (an exact match), but since then i've forgotten which yt video it was.
However, i did found a replacement but its not an exact "type" i was looking for.
I've poured over many sources and abandoned the search since.
Many sound effects i've listened to are not usable, i'm surprised to see so many.
Thanks for the reply.
just something i made just before seeing your post hence i commented https://freesound.org/people/Diaframe/sounds/400209/
i dont mind doing some experiments if i have a better idea of what kind of thing you rly look for
I've uploaded a sound and after approval either you can look for it or i will post a link here.
Albeit technically clean, this sound effect has a reverb/echo at end and i'd like to find a more ... "raw" source with single shot that can be later processed as multiple channel / echo / whatever effect.
I hope this upload will clear things up.
Oh by the way, is there a standardised "language" that can describe a sound in text form ?
Or is just "you know, sounds like frying pan falling on a pillow" kind of description ?

Hopefully this will help the what-i-meant

5 slightly different sounds. hope this helps
Ummm... not to criticize, but i don't know any other way for feedback.
The sound i put up is for large solid objects that can't resonate at higher frequencies.
That being said, these sounds are kind of hollow. I'm sorry i know you invested effort, but i had to say it.
Hey ZurfR,
no problem.
Could you perhaps describe exactly for what kind of object/event this sound is needed for?
This would make work a bit easier.
You described the requested sound as "thump or thud, heavy metallic, single-shot, no reverberations".
In your latest response you added "for large solid objects that can't resonate at higher frequencies" Also your example sound had "A thump of heavy metal object (large gate / vault door)" in its description. Still I´m not sure about some details:
What kind of object exacly?
What kind of event will trigger this sound?
Can you visually describe both?
The more details you post, the better the results will be.
I intended this sound to describe just that - a heavy solid metal gate closing. Ofcourse, the gate has a frame that is also solid. So when the two collide, they produce a single loud "thump" with very little reverberation and at a low frequency.
Or imagine a hydraulic press suddenly loosing pressure and upper hammer drops on a base below from height of say 300mm.
Thank you for the description!!
Helped a lot
Just made 6 different sounds.
https://freesound.org/people/eardeer/sounds/400997/
Please select the one that fits best and I will do some variations, if necessary.
One question, though:
When imagining a large hydraulic hammer dropping on a solid surface or something similar, I have this hammer-hits-anvil like "ping" in mind - the sound of the very first impact of two heavy and solid metal objects. Is this impact sound needed/important? (left it out, because the sound should be a low one)
edit: more thumps https://freesound.org/people/eardeer/sounds/401041/
@eardeer
all sounds are alot closer to it but last one (nr.6) is closest. Uhh i'd hate to ask for more but if you are interested - try to imagine it underwater, still less echo at end and a little sharper rise at start, just a smidge
Dang it if i could just find that friggin' example (it was great). That's the price of trying to find perfect sound and ignoring everything else
Comments on other sounds :
1-still too high, sounds hollow
2-something heavy dropped on next floor, echo
3-similar, but wall, echo
4-shallow, car door, echo
5-short with too much echo, back wall of large cabinet or piece of furniture was hit with doors open
Maaybe if i define this differently : what if you place a microphone directly at the surface of one of solid objects, then collide them. And also reduce microphone's sensitivity to reject ambient echos ?
A device akin to laryngophone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throat_microphone) used to reject aircraft noise.
Does this make any sense ?
As for second set, they're not better than a first set. They have too soft rise and too much echo.
Haha...This would be great. If I only had the opportunity to record massive device/object impact stuff under good acoustic conditions.. maaan...
In theory good (contact) mics and a decent recording device would do the job.
But then there is still the problem of finding a really massive object or objects to record wich also can be moved and/or dropped on surfaces, slammed on each other etc.
I already thought about letting an anvil drop on a steel plate or something to get this "chunk" of heavy metallic impact.I dont own both, unfortunately. Anyways...
All sounds I uploaded for this request so far were "handcrafted" and not actually recorded.
The effort doing this is no problem, btw. I like this And since we are getting closer (no.6) I will do some more sounds until there is a as good-as-perfect match.
But please keep in mind that the only true solution for achieving any kind of great foley sound would be to record *exactly* what is needed under near to perfect conditions and with high-end equipment. Something like the guys from Tonsturm are doing: https://tonsturm.com/
Since I have to do it within some limitations, it might take a bit longer to get it right
edit:
5 more sounds, slightly altering attack & release from sound no.6 (DeepThumps): https://freesound.org/people/eardeer/sounds/401126/
again, pick the one that fits best
Second sound ! Best for no echo and short rise. Uhhh now the tricky part - it needs more higher frequency components, but problem is how to add them without adding (too much ?) reverberations as well, can easily become "hollow" (dang it, i really need to start to properly write "reverberations" and "echoes").
Thanks for the effort and description of the equipment involved. This helps me to know more about foley and deciding when is "good enough".
Reading your post, i just imagined how hard it is for example to record jet airplane take-offs. You have to contend with best possible location (not all places at airport are allowed), then try to find a moment with no winds, no ground equipment, no city traffic, no people ... I think sometimes it's easier to just photograph a lightning strike and be done with it
One last note : have you heard of commerical program named Photosounder ? It is a software that loads up sound, makes a spectrogram, user edits this as 2D image, then this is converted back to sound and saved.
I mentioned this first because it has an older brother (a freebie !) at http://arss.sourceforge.net/
8 more thupms with higher freq. components. No long reverberations. Attached a contact mic to my washing machine and slammed the door a few times, then combined this sounds with the second thump from my last upload. No.4 sounds quite good imo.
https://freesound.org/people/eardeer/sounds/401198/
Again, pick your favorite.
Photosounder/ARSS are looking interesting! Great concept. I´ll start hand-drawing all future sounds
Thanks for the link!! I will definitely play around with ARSS a little
