New to this great forum, wish I had found it sooner, I have a Cold War attack warning device from the UK and am trying to recreate the sounds it broadcast when in use in the 1960's and 70's. I can extract the audio from a DVD to recreate two out of the three sounds, but the one I require most is quiet and distorts if amplified in Audacity. So my question to you experts is, In the SOUNDS listings there are a few that are cclose to what I require, but not exact. Can I ask how what Software is used to make these soundsas I think I could recreate the one I need. The noise is a high pitched beep and 1/2 second intervals. Many thanks for any advice.

Hello, you might be able to use Audacity (free and EXCELLENT) to tweak a sound that you have. Change the pitch, make it slower or faster, add echoes, etc.

I'm also fairly new here (apart from some audiological research a few years ago) but if you're comfortable with audacity already, i might suggest that you find the cleanest moment of the sample you're trying to recreate, and loop it. Then you can add a track and use the tone generator to match the frequency.

from there, you can play with the effect to replicate the raw track. highlight the first part of the sound and use the "sliding stretch" effect to play with frequency ramps and you'll want to add lots of delay and reverb.
