Hiya - I'm looking for a classic 'wartime' submarine sonar ping sample, BUT it's gota have a kindof empty, sad, hollow, lonely feel to it.
I've tried listening to the other sonar samples on freesound, but none of them have quite the quality I'm looking for - they all sound a bit synthesised. The sound I have in my head is kindof an echoing 'Ping', followed by a distant echoing 'Chrrsh' - exactly like the the sonar noise on a classic film called 'The Bedford Incident'. I really want to be able to use the sample for a song I've written, but I haven't got the first clue about how to make one myself. I'm hoping somebody out there will be able to help me...
Cheers,
Alan
Hi..
Ok.. the sound I'm looking for (this is a bit difficult to describe by text!) - it's a bit more sort of 'analogue' sounding than the current sonar-type 'ping' offerings on freesound. In the film, the sonar noise used starts with a high-pitched 'ping' (which has loads of rolling reverb - sounds as if it's echoing off the depths of the cold, dark ocean) ..... followed, approximately 1.25 secs later by a kindof distorted high-pitched 'white noise' (0.25 - 0.5 secondish) burst - again with the same cold, dark, empty reverb to it... Actually, come to think of it, the 'white noise' sounds almost like a slightly more distorted version of the sound a 10-pin bowling ball makes when you get a 'strike'. (If that makes any sense..)
I guess the thing is that the sound in the film sounds kinda real - you can hear the depth, size and emptyness of the water. With the 'ping', and the white noise burst that follows, it forms a kindof slow rhythm that (I think!) will work with my song.
Anyway, thanks v. much for your help!
Alan
alanpod:
I read your specs & made an attempt at creating the sound you described. It should be up after the moderator checks it.
Hope it helps,

Hi Alanpod, I've uploaded my 'ping'. Is this what you are looking for?

-> Thanks very much! It's *almost* spot on! The 'ping' is exactly right (superb!) and the second noise is nearly there (it could do with being a touch louder, a little more high pitched and a bit more distorted/white noisey), but it's certainly useable! I've just downloaded some sequencing software - and I'm very new to all this - but I'll see if I can have a play around myself and tweak things.
(Of course feel free to modify it further yourself - if you have the time!)
Thanks v. much,
Alan
