This is the official Shower In The Shower thread!
What would it sound like if a certain sound was re-recorded many, many times? What if that sound would travel all over the world? What would be the end result?
Now you can find this out with the Shower In The Shower experiment initiated by Plagasul!
The idea to change sounds through re-recording rather than duplication was first explored by Alvin Lucier. He recorded his own voice ("I'm sitting in a room...", then played this recording and recorded that sound again, played it once again and recorded the result again. The process was repeated over and over again and the end result was very, very different from the initial sound. More information here
To take things a step further, music group Neurosis re-recorded their entire album through their alter-ego's Tribes of Neurot in a similar fashion and after 30+ cycles, the album has changed completely, leaving harmonic distortion as the pure essence of their sound. More information here
Now, at Freesound, we take this experiment another step further. We are going to re-record the sound of a shower... in a shower (hence the title) not only in the same progressive way but we also let the sound travel all over the world. That is because Freesound allows us to change sounds indefinitely from anywhere to anywhere. See also our previous discussion in this thread
Ok, this is the process so far. Freesounder Plagasul recorded the sound of his shower and uploaded it to Freesound. After that, user LG downloaded it and made a re-recording (see download below) Now the next user can download that sound, play it in his or her bath room and record that sound. Then upload it, and the next user repeats the same steps.
What do you have to do to join this experiment? Just post a "I'm is next!" message in this thread, download the most recent recording of the shower, re-record it, upload it and announce its arrival in this thread. Don't forget to tell us when and where you made the re-recording. That's all! Easy and fun!
The original sound can be found here
User LG (err, me, that is) made the first re-recording and that can be downloaded here
To summarise, the next step is straightforward. Post an "I'll have a go" message below. Download the re-recording by LG, play it in your bathroom, record that sound and upload it. Announce your new recording in this thread and the next user repeats the same process with your sound. Cool!
Can you guess what 50+ cycles do to this sound? hock: Neither can I. So let's just start this experiment!
I'm next!!
EDIT: Recorded and uploaded! awaiting moderation...
By the way, LG, my girlfriend also looked at me with a funny face whe she's seen all the mess in the bathroom. She told me: "Hey! put your gear wherever you want but NOT IN THE BATHROOM!" lol!
Done! Super-fast moderatin' here, hehe.
there you go:

I made a mistake and named the sound "bebops_shower_3rd-rec.flac" when in fact it is the second re-recording, not the third...
I took a picture of the whole thing with my crappy camera. Maybe I'll try to upload it somewhere sometime.
Who's next?
bebops - you could upload your picture to the freesound flickr account!

Cool to hear that the sound really changes already!

Haha! We have definitely crossed the line there! Us sitting there with the recording gear is probably regarded as a full-scale invasion of The Last Girlie Bastion! hock:
guys! keep going, but, geotag!!!
and, I made it so the sampletree can be viewed from one single root:

the bass BUMPS are getting louder. I applied a little low-shelf to tune down the bass a little because in real life it wasn't that loud either...

True! I've done it. Sorry the image is very blurry and low quality: http://www.flickr.com/photos/96798606@N00/272049598/in/pool-freesound/
Oh, I also geotagged and cleaned the bathroom (that made my girl happy again)
ok, i did one too. Dont know if its usable though, because my speakers are broken (the higher frequencies arent played, and they are very bassy). Which of course manipulates very much with the sound. But you people decide if we´ll use it or not.
Hmm, hope i did it right. i called it "3rd re-recording of shower in the shower" or something close. But it havent appeared on the site yet...
Dont really have much time, since ill be away until next monday and are leaving in a very short while.
Best regards
