EDIT : I opened this topic several month ago, and still need some advices, mostly from those who already live in North America :
1 : I really do need good advices on where to buy a new computer.
I basically need to find a place where I could say "Hi, I just want a P4 2.8 Ghz, with 1 Go Ram, 2 120 Go disks, a 19" screen, with Windows XP pro, and nothing more : I'll take care about the keyboard, the soundcard and the video card myself".
Does such place still exists in the Midwest (I don't know yet, among Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois or Wisconsin, in which state I would live, but know each of these states; and I do not fear Chicago drivers : I'm French, so I can drive anywhere...) or... on Internet ? I tried Dell, but it's not enough.
2: How does it work, with Internet providers ? Where should I suscribe for a DSL line (not cable) ? Does some include a phone line ? Webpage space ?
3. Any ideas about mics or professional softwares dealers ?
If you feel uncomfortable about posting corporations links here, send me an MP. And if you have addresses in San Fransisco or New York, I have friends who could help me there...
Pleaaaaase help ! This is all blur to me, and I'll move before july...
What follows was the original message I posted some time ago. If you have any ideas about forums...
Sorry, no artwork made with Freesound, just a deseperate guy "forced" to move to the US.My wife is american, my daughter is half american, so she said "why not try to live there, see if it's better". Why not, indeed, but...
I'm participating to a sort of amateur network here in France, providing sounds, soundtracks, and even a little bit of music, for videos or animated movies (my favorite).
I do not claim myself as a pro, just a guy who likes to work on other's projects, and improve his skills...
Most of the time, I meet people on forums, they send me their video file, I send them back a soundtrack. I've got nothing to show but this as an example of what I do... I'm only beginning...
I'd like to do the same in the US or Canada, but I'm kind of alost (my english must be partly responsible of it): does anyone of you knows forums where I could find the same kind of people ?
I wish to continue to work with French people, but it sounds silly to not work with my neighbors...
Thanks for your help !
I would have thought the phonography list
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/phonography/
associated with this
would fit the bill. There's quite an active sound-art scene in the States, and indeed Canada too, and some of the latter speak a form of French to help with the homesickness Isn't Hildegard Westerkamp from somewhere in Canada?
Anyway. I'm sure our friends across the Atlantic will welcome you and keep you busy - good luck!
(Ermine, is there anything you don't know ? )
Thanks for the links, but I think it's little to high for me (and for the moment). I'm trying to do some kind of sound creations, but I'm not ready yet.
Anything a little more "amateur like", and more focused on video and / or animated movies ?
The phonography guys are down-to-earth and not all into the rareties of sound art. Indeed there are a few that work mainly with video. There are also some who are into the more pure aspects of phonography and some whose work sounds like line noise to my uncultured ears but it all makes the world a more interesting place.
Give the list a try - they're generally a really helpful bunch of guys.
(Ermine, is there anything you don't know ? )
There's far too much I don't know - but then learning about it makes life interesting

For buying a basic PC like you spec, most cities have some kind of local computer store where they will build the PC to your specifications.
For purchase of software and microphones, www.sweetwater.com has competitive prices and a very good return policy as well as knowlegable sales staff. They are based in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
For DSL providers, AT&T exists almost across the entire United States. http://www.att.com/gen/landing-pages?pid=3308
They will only sell combination phone/DSL packages. You can't get their DSL service without purchasing their land-line based phone service as well.
Hey Glaneur viens au Québec, c'est tout près des États-Unis, c'est beau, et en plus on parle français!
English: Hey Glaneur come to Québec, i'ts close to the States, it's beautiful and we speak french!
Best Buy, Circuit City, Comp Usa, and Brandsmart all sell towers individually and you can find them without all the software bells and whistles for under $300 if you look around. I find pentium 2's and 3's in the trash some times and sell them at yard sales once in a while if I can piece together a complete system that works. There are always used computers in the paper for cheap as well. If you can wait till a computer show comes around at a local fairground or convention center, you can get stuff dirt cheap, like $175 bucks for just a tower, loaded. Stay away from malls and TV commercials. I never buy sound gear at a store, way overpriced. I'll pick up strings or emergency things from a music shop but I shop for gear online. Check out americanmusicalsupply and musiciansfriend for the best prices and service. I have bought stuff from them for 20 years with no problems. For amps I buy Carvin from the catalog, still made in the USA and cheap, they last forever and have killer specs. They are not carried anywhere else because they sell direct for much less than similar quality items. Good luck and stay away from the west coast, it's weird.
Now it's done, my little family and I moved to Manhattan, Kansas. Ready for the midwest experience !
We bought a house, sadly with no basement, but a big sort of barn in the backyard where I'll built a soundproof room, maybe next summer.
Advises are still welcome !

LS you are the biggest online BLEEP_243524 (by jovica) I have ever met. After we already went over all this and you still stir shit up. I am an independent, you immature rosey odonnel regurgitating leftist cynic without your own opinion. Bram, delete the BLEEP (by jovica) please before I write an album about him.
Oh and by the way, if the east coast was only 3 BLEEP_235235 (by jovica) states instead of 14, then how cool would you be?

I have updated some sample packs and will be making some new ones soon. Stay tuned...
Sorry to turn this political, oh wait that BLEEP_35465 (by jovica) started it AGAIN.
