A suburban electric train pulls up at a station in Calcutta on a summer evening. The train honks a couple of times before entering the station as there is a busy level crossing just before the station and lot of people are crossing the area. Some human voices are heard. They are passengers standing near the gate of the moving train. The sound was recorded handheld with an Edirol R09HR, using its built-in microphones. MP3 file has been uploaded but original WAV recording is available on request.

I am sorry Chalice80 I had a hard disc crash that wiped out a lot of my files and not everything has a back up. I shall look for it. How soon do you want it? By the way, this is a modern suburban electric train. The partition trains would have sounded a little different back then in the late 40s. The main difference is in the speed of the train. This is much faster than an old steam engine. Also the electric horn wouldn't be authentic at all if you are trying to recreate the partition era. But I suppose in a dance performance so much authenticity might not be that important for a few seconds' sound effect. Personally, I feel even the modern concrete slippers as opposed to the wooden slippers of yesteryears make a lot of difference in the sound.

Calcuttan! I love your samples and am interested in getting a .wav of this file. Do you have any other samples of trains? I'm doing a dance piece in California led by a dancer, pateldanceworks, looking at migration during Partition.
