My simulator constantly measures the physical distance between the two moons in the simulation, as they orbit a superpuff gas giant. I exported this data and was plotting it on a visual graph when I noticed that it resembled a sound wave.
Out of sheer curiosity, I converted it to a WAV file to see what it would sound like. This was the result.
I'm amazed to see almost a sort of formant structure in this sound, like a voice. The rising and falling pitches result from the moons gravitationally interacting and migrating their orbits over time.
A few details:
- The simulation spans a time that represents over 3 Earth years. This is condensed into 11.25 seconds, or sped up by a factor of 8,820,000.
- The waveform was also pitched up by 10 octaves to make it more listenable.
- The moons are each roughly Earth-sized, and the distance between them varies between roughly 20,000 km and 5.5 million km (which translates to the sound's range of amplitude).
