A full freight train passby in the dead of night.
Thanks to a cat holding up my bike ride, I happened to be out with my recorder at exactly the right time and place to capture this. Once the train passed out of sight, I had just enough time to breathe a sigh of relief before my recorder's batteries ran out. Truly a miraculous response to a prayer!
This train had lots of different kinds of car, all of which sound slightly different. Unfortunately I didn't note which cars came in which order; I know there were tanker cars just after the middle or so, and I know the hopper cars sound very big and heavy.
Recorded on a ZOOM H4n Pro in 48kHz, 24bit, HPF @ 80Hz. Device was handheld, and I was several yards away from the tracks (didn't measure exact distance).
Original recording had audible crossing bells through most of it. iZotope RX 8 Elements was used to surgically remove the most obvious bell frequencies; the train itself is loud enough to drown out the rest (except during the one quietest part).
