This is the original clip* from where a mysterious sound appears. In spectral view you can see a "bar" of sound in high frequencies**. I isolated it and pitched it down. Here's the result:

*There's actually two clips. In the first, about two minutes, the sound appears during a thunder. In the second, about 20, corresponds to the processed sound I posted first.
**You can't see it here, but when you check closely the whole two-hour original clip, you can see frequencies near the "bar" are a bit quieter when the bar appears. That means the fenomena consists not only of the "bar", but also of the frequencies nearby being silenced a bit. That could point to a problem of the recorder itself. Strangely enough, the recorder doesn't mishave in any other place.

To me it sounds like the high pitch of high power lines or transformer discharge arch, because of water grounding. Usually because of an cracked insulater. I say this because you're living in a city, they have HUGE power draws & LOTS of transformers. Hence the discharge, it doesn't mean that the discharge was some huge arch and spark show, but more like a discharge down a hairline crack resulting in a frequency the mike picked up.
Just my thoughts on it....

I had an H1 and sometimes it made a soft noise, but I always thought it was from its own electronics, even after the A/D process, it was like an old cassette pumping/breathing but a very low level (very curious comparison), different from this one, it sounds like an AC whine to me from some kind of transformer/ballast, and it seems to be near.
I like this time of strange noises all over the world, "The Hum" and so on, very appealing for us. Thanks, Bulbastre.

Isolated then demodulated here ... http://www.freesound.org/people/Timbre/sounds/132931/# IMO it's EMI something (like a fluorescent light) intermittently operating at below its correct voltage, unstable mains voltage as a result of the electrical storm.
