I feel that most people that feel fond on the 90s/80s do so because the only choose to remember the good parts from that time, and their memories of it looks more like a smashing pumpkins video rather than what actually happened. They're thinking breakfast club and nirvana, but forgetting the deeply queerphobic/racist/misogynist culture that existed at that time. This is amplified by the fact that they were teenagers at the time, and that makes every moment gilded. If you went into the future to the 2020's you would find people talking the same way about the 2000's and how everything was better then. Even now some people look back on the late 90's/early 2000's as a fond time rather than the popularity of the 80's that was around a decade ago.
