I think that has been the default sound for docomo phones, the largest carrier here. I'm not sure if the other carriers use the same sound. Smartphone apps also have their own sounds and are selectable.

So, to answer your question, when an earthquake hits, you'll probably hear three or four or five sounds from a half dozen to a dozen phones around you. Then some people check their phones for more details info on the nature of the quake while others are looking up and around.

You can adjust the thresholds on the smartphone apps to receive warnings of smaller quakes. Half of the warnings I receive, once a month or so, can't be felt. The others sway lights and utility wires. Then, occasionally, you look and see it will be a big one. Then people begin looking for exits or telling people to get under heavy tables or to go to door frames or other reinforced areas. And begin wondering how close you are to a potential tsunami.

So like does this sound come on every phone if their is an emergency like this?
