Rural area in early spring with natural small water / river named Zandleij in village Cromvoirt in the Netherlands. Here are small farms around.
You hear cows in a distant barn. The #0:00 Chiffchaff sings the highest song and the #0:26 Common Magpie calls with its croaky voice. The Great Tit also sings but far away. On the left, the #0:38 Eurasian Blackbird can be heard briefly. Of course, the #0:05 Eurasian Wren cannot be missing here.
About the stream Zandleij where I am
The Zandleij is a watercourse in the Dutch province of North Brabant.
It starts north of Tilburg. From here the river flowed in a northeasterly direction, through the wet and low-lying nature reserve De Brand north of Udenhout, and then past Zwijnsbergen Castle near Helvoirt. The current then bends in a northerly direction and cuts through the cover sand ridge. At Cromvoirt the Zandleij ends in the 's-Hertogenbosch-Drongelen drainage canal.
The Zand-leij stream has never been completely natural, the name of which is 'leij', which means 'to guide'.
It is assumed that the Zandleij was dug between the 14th and 18th centuries. In the 1960s there were capacity problems and a new bed was dug. The original bed is now called Zandkantse Leij.
The canal collects seepage water and thus contributes to the desiccation of the De Brand nature reserve, while during excessive rainfall this area is flooded with polluted water from elsewhere.
About the village of Cromvoirt
The name Cromvoirt consists of the parts crom and voirt. This combination of words means; wet land that can be walked through.
The settlement of Cromvoirt must have originated around 1100 at the transition between higher sandy soils and the low-lying river valley of the Meuse.
The low-lying village of Cromvoirt is located between two higher parts: the Vughterheide in the east and the De Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park in the west.
