About the stream Zandleij where I am
The Zandleij is a watercourse in the Dutch province of North Brabant.
It starts north of Tilburg. From here the river flowed in a northeasterly direction, through the wet and low-lying nature reserve De Brand north of Udenhout, and then past Zwijnsbergen Castle near Helvoirt. The current then bends in a northerly direction and cuts through the cover sand ridge. At Cromvoirt the Zandleij ends in the 's-Hertogenbosch-Drongelen drainage canal.
The Zand-leij stream has never been completely natural, the name of which is 'leij', which means 'to guide'.
It is assumed that the Zandleij was dug between the 14th and 18th centuries. In the 1960s there were capacity problems and a new bed was dug. The original bed is now called Zandkantse Leij.
Water quality
This water is different from natural water and far from clean. On this page we tell you more about the quality of the water from the Zandleij and why it is better to avoid contact with this water, for humans and animals.
The Zandleij is a stream with a length of about 13 kilometers. It starts in Tilburg North and flows through Udenhout, Helvoirt and Cromvoirt to end in the Drongelens Kanaal near Vught. From our sewage plants, purified wastewater flows into the stream. Usually it ends up in an existing stream through which water already flows. For the Zandleij the purified wastewater is the main source, supplemented with rainwater in wet periods. In dry months, almost only treated wastewater flows through the Zandleij.
About the village of Cromvoirt
The name Cromvoirt consists of the parts crom and voirt. This combination of words means; wet land that can be walked through.
The settlement of Cromvoirt must have originated around 1100 at the transition between higher sandy soils and the low-lying river valley of the Meuse.
The low-lying village of Cromvoirt is located between two higher parts: the Vughterheide in the east and the De Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park in the west.
