It is here where the line crossings took place at the end of the Second World War between the occupied north and liberated south of the Netherlands.
After the battle for the southern part of the Netherlands at the end of 1944, the northern part of the Netherlands remained occupied for a long time. The Germans patrolled the river Merwede, which separated the south from the north, but preferred not to venture into the Biesbosch, a large wet-land. This dangerous area was therefore the most suitable way to go from occupied to liberated territory and vice versa. The Albrecht Group provided the connection. Later a number of men came together to set up the connections between the liberated area and the occupied area. The Line Crossers Group consisted of 21 men from Sliedrecht, Werkendam, Sleeuwijk, Lage Zwaluwe, Waalwijk, Dordrecht & Hardinxveld Giessendam. In total, approximately 374 crossings were made, between Sliedrecht & Lage Zwaluwe and Werkendam & Drimmelen.
