Stopped on a wet morning commute to record the rain falling on leaves by a shelter in Admiralty Park.
I decided to compare two recording methods: my spaced pair em273 omnis with bike helmet as a baffle in between, and the h1n internal XY cardioid mics.
This recording is with the DIY em273 omnis. I had them mounted as a spaced pair on either side of my bike helmet, which acted as a foam baffle in between them. This recording has a much more natural sense of place than the XY mics. There is less stereo separation in the near field, and it tends to make the near and far sounds cohere into a single soundscape. Notably, the mid-range forest sounds sound much closer to what my ears would pick up. It also has a little less high end and more low end, especially noticeable in the distant road noise.
See my other sounds for the omni recording.
