The Westland Petrel is a small pelagic bird which breeds during the austral winter in the densely forested hills of the South Island's West Coast of New Zealand.
It is very early in the morning and the birds are outside their burrows preparing their departure. The activity in the colony is at its climax. They will gather soon on the edge of the cliff to take off for a week long trip at sea.
