SASS is short for Stereo Ambient Sampling System. It was originally developed at Crown Audio and went through a couple of iterations during its production lifetime. I modeled mine off of the original, which used omni capsules mounted flush with the boundary surfaces. A later version used PZM mics mounted facing the boundary surfaces.
The SASS creates a stereo image that works well with speakers and headphones alike and is (somewhat) mono compatible in the farfield.
