With nearly 330 stores and services, Metropolis at Metrotown is British Columbia’s largest shopping centre, and it has a multi-story car park beneath it to match. To ventilate such a massive facility, an equally massive ventilation unit is required, which you can hear the intake of here.
During an hour of fruitlessly hunting for my parked car after seeing a movie in the complex, I was at least granted the opportunity to snag a recording of this powerful system while the facility was otherwise empty. You could hear it humming throughout the entire place, as if you were within a living concrete animal. One of the more intimate experiences I've had in a space, if only for how small and lost I felt inside of it, forcing this innocent kind of vulnerability out of me. When you stood next to the intake, you couldn't hear yourself speak.
There are two separate parking facilities connected to the same mall, so if you visit, make sure you go back to the same one you came from - not that it's easy to tell, because they look identical and you might (rightfully) assume they connect underground.
