The common tern (scientific name Sterna hirundo) is a seabird of the gull family that breeds in temperate and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America, but leaves its breeding range in autumn as a highly migratory bird and overwinters in coastal tropical and subtropical areas, mainly in the southern hemisphere. The plumage during the breeding season is light grey on the upper part of the body and white or very light grey on the lower part, and is mainly distinguishable by the black top of the head, the orange-red legs and the long, narrow bill, which may be reddish with a black tip or completely black (depending on the subspecies). It can be confused with several very similar species of tern, in particular the Arctic tern, from which it can be distinguished by its individual markings in plumage, colour of legs and bill, and advertisement.
