Dear Freesounders,

the 5th of April 2015 was a very important date for Freesound. - On that same date, 10 years ago, Freesound was born.

10 years is a longtime, especially on the internet! - Yep, it takes us to the pre-smartphone era...
In fact, Freesound is less than 3 months younger than Youtube. - Can you remember the world before youtube?

So this month, we have a Dare (friendly competition) dedicated to celebrate Freesound's 10th aniversary.
Here are the rules:

1 - Entries should be of a musical nature. 5 mins is the maximum lenght.
2 - Each participant can submit up to 2 pieces.
3 - An entry is made by uploading the piece to Soundcloud and posting in this thread with a link to your piece. The posting in Soundcloud must contain all necessary attributions for the samples used. An explanation/description of how the piece was created would also be nice.
4 - All sounds used must be from Freesound and must also comply with rules 5 and 6.
5 - To celebrate the 10 years of Freesound, you must use at least one sample from each year. (see below on explanation of how this works).
6 - You are not allowed to use samples that you have uploaded to Freesound.
7 - Any processing, mixing, mash-up, effects are allowed on the samples.
8 - Deadline for submissions has been extended by one week. New (and final) deadline 7 Jun 2015, 11pm GMT.

Explanation on how to get samples from each Freesound year:
- When you search for sounds by typing keywords on the searchbox, the list of results includes the date when the sample was uploaded.
- The first Freesound year goes from 5th of April 2005 to 4th April 2006, the second Freesound year goes from 5th of April 2006 to 4th April 2007, and so on...
- After you have run a search, above the results you can see the search keywords and a drop list allowing you to sort your results by different criteria. Selecting "Date added (oldest first)" or "date added (newest first)" sorts the samples by date.
- You can then use the "previous", "next" or the page numbers at the top of the list to nagivatge your search results and look for samples uploaded in a particular year.

Hi all, here's my stab at it. Nothing too revolutionary or spectacular, Just a bunch of funky loops and sounds slapped together entirely in Goldwave. More detail in the description on Soundcloud. I managed to use some of the earliest sounds, uploaded in March 2005, including the famous cello-morph #6, the first available sound. This thing has a smattering of random stuff as well including a 2-year-old, a kitchen knife, a dog, a donkey, crowds in 4 languages, and several freesounders talking or phrasing about freesound. I also through in a grenade, the first sound I ever downloaded,

Here is my submission to the challenge: "First Time Here, Looking Upwards". I made use of various ambient noises and individual instrument notes. This was a ton of fun to dig through everything on the website and just download what I THINK would have fit, only to see after downloading it was really tough piecing things together the way I thought it out hahaha. Created/Arranged in FruityLoops, though I did some noise cancelling and cutting in CoolEdit and Audacity. I tried to keep the samples as pure as I could-- without a lot of editing. A lot of fun, for me-- going back through samples... I might eventually expand the track. Hope you guys like it.

I tried adding one of my dares there, but I don't think Joanna is looking at her messages on soundcloud anymore. I last checked about half a year ago, and at that time, the Joanna's last upload was a year prior.

The morphed speech was created with sms-tools. Everything else was modified and assembled in Cubase 8. Thanks for listening.

Happy Birthday Freesound! Awesome to see so many people putting their stuff up to share, well done everyone, I will get to listening to them all when I can!

I imported my samples into audacity and made myself a sample kit. I then used Fruity Loops 10 with my new sample pack and to add some more effects / slow down speed up and what not. Finished track exported as WAV and then back into audacity for some minor adjustments and to export as an mp3.

Dates below, links to the samples are on the Soundcloud post. I used CC0 only to see if I could make something 'on a budget'. If I missed you and you want credit let me know but I think I got everything. Have no idea what genre this is so I just tagged it with happy birthday freesound!

Hello, Thank you to all that have submitted entries so far. This one turned out to have a very good participation!

I am told there is another entry in the making and was asked if I could extend the deadline.
Since I am not planning to hold a vote for the best entry and this is just for fun, I have agreed to extend by another week. - NEW DEADLINE is 7 Jun, 11pm GMT.

First post has been updated also to reflect this.

However, pelase note I do not plan to make deadline extensions a habit. This time it also works well for me because I am kind of busy to start the next dare immediately (although one is already planned, eh eh eh ...)

Heres my submission for the dare,i actually found it harder than what i would of thought.I made the foundation for the track pretty easily,getting other samples to fit in with it is what i found hard,because i liked the way it sounded with only a third of the samples i used.I get samples from this site quite often and thought it would be a piece of cake,total opposite.

Also i noticed what made it even harder is the fact you cant search by the actual years,only oldest and newest.I suggest maybe adding that in as a option feature so you dont have to try and go through pages and pages of sounds just to get to the year you want.I tryed doing this but was way to time consumer and went back to searching keywords and just going through random sounds keeping a eye on the year it was uploaded.

Hopefully i will try and participate in more of these dares this site has to offer,im always into trying to mix and create new tracks.

Hopefully someone gets some satisfaction out of the track i arranged.

I wans't going to submit an entry for this one. I only had something half-backed and not much inspiration or time.
But since I was asked for an extension I gave it a go...

It is too late, so not officially part of the dare anymore (does anyone care?)
It is a slightly crazy piece that contains lots of water sounds - some of them quite manipulated.
It was one of the most fun pieces to make, and I am very please with some parts. Others would need a bit more polish...
