I just noticed that the count of ratings are very low or just zero even when a file was downloaded many times. The rating is IMHO a good tool so I would like to see a higher "rate of ratings" generally. If you agree, how can you reach this goal - any ideas?

Yes, it should be more. Perhaps users should be be able to download a sound only after rating a certain sound. The good side of that is that there are more ratings. The downside is that 'forcing' people to give ratings will probably lead to distorted ratings - just as forcing them to upload (up/down ratio) brings in sounds of poor quality.

Yeah, a pop-up or something would be good. But that still can mean that people just rate your sound 'for fun' rather than that they seriously enjoy your sound (or not!), i.e. not a 'true' rating.
This can happen anytime when you are doing ratings ..
Yes, more comments and ratings would be nice. And yet, you know, at the end you reach the point in which you don't even care about lack of feedback because you are hooked at uploading. It happened to me!
The way I see it, making available to others a sound you love is like sending a message in a bottle: it may take time to get somewhere, so don't worry if there is no immediate response. In the mean time... get out and record more!
I assume people are so gobsmacked at my recordings, they can't think of anything adequate to say ... (dream on)
Ah, the gentle art of self-deception
Alternative hypothesis: the most active users (uploaders) are the ones who do not download often, hence there are less active people - but these users are usually more willing to comment and to rate. Most downloaders are more passive. They should rate and comment but don't do that.
I just downloaded a ton of sample packs and wanted to leave some positive ratings on people but I couldn't find a convenient area which to rate the specific pack when I was looking through the samples and choosing to download.(a bit lazy of me but maybe you could put it in a more obvious location when someone clicks on a sample pack)
as far as I'm concerned I just stopped uploading as I was bored one day and had a look at who was d/loading and after an hour I realised this place is mostly trawled by leaches who have no idea of a sense of community...
I even emailed some of them and they made lame excuses.....
I have more sounds than I ever need and as such hardly ever downloaded..
this is my first visit here in an eon and was prompted by someone leaving a comment
Which did make me feel good...
Who knows if encouragement is given I may upload more -
But this sound was d/loaded 250 times before getting a comment
no body is rating as far as I can see
1. right now there are about 13520 ratings on freesound, and the number has been rising quite rapidly lately (lot's of new members that do rate).
2. in any truely "free" web community you will see a very low ratio of "take" and "give". Think Wikipedia: how many times have *you* (you in general) submitted to wikipedia, and how many times have you looked something up?
3. with Smartelectronix.com I saw that for every 200 people that downloaded a plugin, maybe one would say something. So, 0.5% of people. I'm seeing about the same ratio in freesound: if you count all comments and count all votes then you can see it's a ratio of 0.5% per download. This is actually not as bad as you think.
* I will try to add some fancy javascript to encourage people to comment and to vote.
* The biggest problem right now is that people can't vote/ comment for PACKS and packs is what is downloaded most!!! This is probably my problem, and not yours
I'll see what I can do. But not uploading because no-one is voting/commenting for your files is a bad idea martian

Bram,
A problem my simple brain has had a few times, is that I see that box marked "vote" and I click it, expecting to be taken to another screen where I can do the voting process, only to realise that by clicking on Vote I have just submitted a vote of the default TEN. Believe it or not, I have done the same thing about 3 times.
A suggestion is that you do not set TEN as the default votes, but set that box to blank, or something to make people realise they need to do a selection before hitting Vote.

You are quite right, same happened to me a few times but I didn't care much: when I rate is just because my intention is to rate high. I mean, is there any point in rating something low?
Anyway, maybe because I make my living rating others the whole issue of doing the same here is so unappealing...
I was surprised when downloaded a file. It was both a good surprise and bad one also.

Guiding the downloader to rate or make a comment
Vote default was set on none
These are improvements. I really appreciate it.
The colour and the appearance
The moment he/she clicks the 'download' link, the RED alert pops up. That's a shock. Especially for new comers. I think reminder for rating or commenting should be milder.
