buljBeing able to vote for packs would be a definate plus too.
I requested that a year ago... glad to see some current interest in rating/voting also. I guess I was way ahead of my time... check my old forum posts for future thoughts also. I have to go back the future now, bye.
you guys are thinking to hard about ratings. but here's a thought. i wonder how many people just hit zero-on someones samples they don't like just to lower the average. another thing. i've done a little looking and i've noticed there are many sounds out there with like 9 ratings have like 20 people who voted for it-its peaking at 9-but then those sounds aren't even up on the most highest rated sounds. but yet there are more than one sound on the highest rated sounds list-with barely 20 ratings-not even at 9...and they are up there.
so what's going on with that? did i miss something?
so for me i even question if rating sounds is relevant. because i'm pretty sure people are just hating and marking down sounds because they either have a similar sound up-or they just don't like the person. like i've said i've seen many really really reaally nice sounds with like ratings of 7..and then i listen to a top rated sound-and it has a 8.888 or something..when in fact its a so so sound.
anyway just throwing my hat into this. i personally feel that its just a ego thing and many of us just want people to rate our sounds to see what they have to say or see how good we are.
but i don't see the relevence other wise.
any thoughts?
Comments are more regarded, appropriate and courteous (no offence to anyone) than ratings. Rating is instant, it's (potentially) a simpler thought process and it's only human to make a mistake, inetentional or not.
Additionally, certain people just shouldn't be allowed to rate! Of course I say that with a sense of humour. Look at imdb.com. I've seen some quality films (Dune as an example I can remember - rating 6.4) that just have so much inside of them. Now Dune may not be a great film, but it deserves to be a bit closer to Sin City (8.4) which is special in it's own way but is not one of the all time greats, yet is currently listed as the 67th greatest ever film on IMDB. This is arse, it's currently higher than The Departed ffs which I hope changes. I've come across other examles, perhaps not staggering amounts, but this is undeniably an example of a flawed system.
So basically I say ratings cannot be trusted, a brief indicator only which can easily be wrong. They can (and often are) easily biased due to many causes not directly related to the content of what is being rated. Written reviews give the opportunity to extend the reviewed and provide alternate insight and perspective. Maybe review and rate should be one and the same and not singular?
Of course there's a distinct problem - Some people should not be allowed to write reviews . Furthermore, some things aren't worth a review (some1 should do it though). How's about only allowing ratings below 1 out of 10?
Hi there,
the problem is that different people may have a different concept of what rating a sound means. For some it's just a matter of technical quality, but for others rating has a component of sympathy, feeling or personal preference (which is in essence rather qualitative and hence unamenable to quantification)
We would thus need at least TWO, maybe three, different rating scales:
- Technical quality (to my ears and gear, even if I'm half deaf):
A, perfect
B, Very good
C, Average
D, Bad
E, Awful
- Usefulness (to me):
X, I desperately needed this
Y, Useful
Z, Useless
- Feeling/Preference/Sympathy (to me):
H, You lucky man, I wish I was there;
I, Inspiring, there were more like this one
J, Love it, I hoarded this in my HD and listen to it often.
K, Funny, you are an imaginative dude
L, Makes me happy
and so on...
My view is: either the prompt that encourages rating defines clearly what the user is expected to vote, or... include all three scales! (Bram, you're gonna hate me)
Cheers
J
hey guys,
the rating is difficult, and it's very hard to find an algorithm to please everyone (especially as everyuone wants HIS ratings to be best).
LS, the differences you are seeing are because for the main page I'm using a special algorithm which takes into account the number of times that a file has been rated. Now that rating numbers have gone up a lot, I should probably tweak it again. The numbers you see on the individual pages are different: they are the "raw" average... (i.e. sum(rating)/number(ratings) )
there is NO way I'm going to implement multiple ratings, dobroide, and anyway, as you know, the law of the large numbers should take care of that problem anyway.

here you can experiment a bit yourself:
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/experimental/votes.php?nr=10
change the number at the back for changing the minimal nr of votes.

Greeting, this is my first post, and I just found your fantastic site the other day. I have downloaded 2 samples and plan on getting a bunch more, and I have commented on each that I have gotten. It seems only beneficial to the site as a whole to describe what you hear on the sample, and say what you liked and didn't about it. It just gives browsers of the files more information to go by when doing an overview of potential samples to use.
I must say that I really enjoy the international flavour of this site too. Thanks to all for making such great recordings of what some people would think are mundane, everyday sounds. We (The Pissers) appriciate it very much!
Hi there,
I just want to comment on LS concerns. I agree with him. Let me explain my own experiences:
Somtimes when i posted a new sound, a few poeple like it which makes me happy of course and they gave me 10 points. In this way i got 2,3,4 up to about 6 ratings with an average of 10 points. Afterthat the average was decreased to 6 or 7 with just one more rating. This can only happen if sombody gives just 1 point. Of course, everybody can rate what he want, but my suspicion is that someone just gave this one point to decrease the average and prevent my contribution into the top ten. I made this experience many times !
Therefore my suggestion is to make the ratings public just like the download list so everybody can see which user has done which rating. As of my opinion the ratings will become more truthful. @Bram: Is this possible?
thanks

And while we're at it, let's make all votes in the run for the USA presidenship public as well
Sorry guys, not gonna happen. Let the law of the bad numbers take care of this problem...!
Perhaps I'll implement something like what Acclivity once suggested: before every average drop the lowest and the highest number.

I agree with Erdie, there is some sour grapes voting going on. Also twice people have told me they thought the voting was out of 5, so the vote they gave should be doubled
