Heigh-hooThe colour and the appearance
The moment he/she clicks the 'download' link, the RED alert pops up. That's a shock. Especially for new comers. I think reminder for rating or commenting should be milder.
I don´t think this is so bad, it will not be overseen. That´s good just my opinion ops:

Yeah that's cool, thank you for the effort Bram!
I have some doubt, however, that this will have any long-term effect (have any of you ever used pyrotechnics - whistle bombs, shellcrackers, noise bombs - to repel pest bird? After a couple days the effect is... nil
Anyway, let's wait until we see some comment/rating statistics before and after implementing this!

Ha Ha, ready to import into a spreadsheet. You are a crack !
i'm new here an i starded to dl without comment cuz i did'nt notice the feature i was so captured from the wonderful sound that the play and the dl button was the primary interest, but now i promise to left always a comment of everithing i'll dl , sry again and muchcompliment for the site .
@heigh-hoo:
I can understand your concerns (red shock hock: ) but as long nobody is really forced to make ratings (which really would not make sence) it is ok for me. I really support this reminders. Thanks to Bram. I hope you are not worried about it.

Erdie,
I basically approve this new improvement. And actually I'm getting used to it.
I just wanted to say there can be a better idea on this.
Active members who love this site should think of it.
Bram is in charge of this and may be a smart guy, but many ideas from the members should help.
I've not yet thought of a good one, sorry.
Ok, there is no doubt: feedback has improved as a result of the 'red thing' Even though the number of comments/day is fairly erratic, both ratings and comments rise after implementing Bram's reminder (at p< 0.001, if somebody cares). Check it:

cheers
Statistics for the first 15 days after Bram implementing the reminder (compared to 85 days before). The fact that the number of comments is so tiny and erratic is interesting... Maybe a mix of several causes? Anyway, both comments and ratings correlate nicely:

The rating is IMHO a good tool so I would like to see a higher "rate of ratings" generally. If you agree, how can you reach this goal - any ideas?
I've been thinking that the 10-point scale is too much for me -- actually 11, if you count 0 (zero). Also, I find that I dwell too much on what the points in the scale mean, and how they relate to each other. Does a "10" mean a "perfect" sample? Is anything below a certain number a "failure"? Is the difference between a "1" and a "2" the same as the difference between a "9" and a "10". Maybe I'm thinking about this too much.
Here's the scale that I've settled on:
10: I wish I had made this one.
8: I'd like to use this one.
6: I may not use this one, but I think it's a good one to have around.
and below that, I think I'll follow the "if you have nothing nice to say..." approach.
I agree, we could probably get just as much information from a 5-point scale. Oh well.
I reserve a 10 for 'perfect' sounds, ones that transport me to another place or just make me think "wow". I'll only score a sound as 0 if there's some sort of error with it, or maybe if someone posted a cacophony of screeching nails.
Sometimes it's hard to know what to say, particulalrly with field recordings. A good recording in this category often does just what the description says, but then again if it does that, it's useful and deserves a brief comment, even if that reiterates the description.
Being able to vote for packs would be a definate plus too.
