1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I'm a professional motion picture and television editor, and I discovered FreeSound as a resource for finding and requesting needed sound effects. Since then, I've discovered the joy of contributing original sounds to the database. It's fun.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Well, my needs revolve around foley and sound effects for motion pictures. It seems many others here have the same interests and needs. But there also seems to be a healthy experimental music crowd as well.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Foley effects. Ambiences.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Again, it seems to be more uniquely focused on my needs: finding and downloading sound effects for motions picture work. I also like that I can freely contribute for others to use.
1) Video editing (usually charity) documentaries.
2) Not really. I don't really feel part of the community other than as a user and one-time uploader. I'd like to upload more when I have the time.
3) Ambiences (location sounds), sound effects (rain, motorways, abstract boom sounds etc)
4) I don't know about the other sites. Although I like the new look of this site, and it's easy to use.
1) What do you use Freesound for?
I use Freesound as a resource for sound FX, music, and music samples for film and video projects.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones?
My perception is that Freesound is truly a positive cooperative community of several different types of artists. There are those who graciously provide their high quality work, and those who are grateful for the contributions. I think there is a sense of respect, and an obligation to give credit where it is deserved. I believe the shared goal of everyone on Freesound is simple, and it is to create, share, and contribute to a broad database of sound resources free for everyone.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
I'm interested in a large variety of sounds, but usually I prefer them to be cleanly recorded with little background noise.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
I haven't used many other sites, but I like the clear cut creative commons policy and the community.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I use it to make books
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
I dont care
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
dont care
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Can someonme just make me something that says Dont Worry Bear
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I use them in short films I make.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Yes I do perceive some shared goals and usually the comments are polite and very sound focused which is great because on so many sites not sound related people write flippant, childish responses but here the people visiting the site have purpose and they respond appropriately. the shared goals are often to use the sounds for films and myself and the other users appreciate the quality.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) It changes depending on my projects. have searched for space sounds, keys jingle sounds, spacey music, snoring, party sounds, laughing, sounds of pleasure of a mild nature.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)I appreciate the quality. I actually have never used the ones you mention but I have tried other sites in the past and this was the first one I came to-that I like the quality of and the way it is organized and so I haven't looked elsewhere yet.
Sorry, I already responded but couldn't figure out how to edit my prior post...
Another thing I use Freesound for is to make qualitative comparisons between different mics and field recorders. I like that most users are fairly detailed about what they used to record their sounds. I've already made purchasing decisions based partly on what I've been able to hear on Freesound.

1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I use it for sound editing when I need a specific sound that i can't find in pro sound libraries (for ex : Tharir place evenements or a man singing in amazonian jungle). The geotagged samples are great for that. And as an occasional soundman, I share some recordings made during shootings with professional gear. And also I love creative commons then i'm pleased to participate.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Not shure
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
As I said earlier I'm interested in field recordings (made with professional equipement is better) and geotagged sounds to find very particular sounds. I'm not intersted in sound -design "bricolages" because I prefer make mines...
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
It's really different because Freesound is more focused on field-recordings than others (soundcloud is great for music and DJ mixes but not for sound)
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I mostly use freesound to share field recordings I have made and that I think might be interesting with the community. As a professional musician I often use my own recordings in my work, but am not precious about keeping those recordings secret! I occasionally use Freesound to source sounds I have not been able to record myself.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
The only shared goal I perceive is the sharing! People seem genuinely excited to share their recordings and others are excited to use them.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I am only interested in field recordings of real things. "Generated" sounds are not of interest as that is what I am doing in my own studio.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
It's the general purity of simple recordings - they are elemental or atomic and can be used in so many ways in combination with other material.
1) I use them for video game sound effects. Usually these are open source games that have sounds of unknown origin that need replacement.
2) When I see friendly, helpful replies in the "request" subforum and how people tolerate titles like "NEED SOUND!!!", then I feel that our goal is to lead by example: provide sounds so others can use them because they helped you by providing sounds that you are using now.
3) Sound effects for video games: clean recordings of one subject. Also: loopable sounds of devices and nature.
The most important thing is that the license is 100% clear. When sounds are edits of license-incompatible sources, they mud the database (see more below).
I would be interested in procedural sounds and them being shared under free licenses. However, there is not enough of a standard there I believe, to make it feasible.
4) Only freesound has licenses that are good (cc0 and cc-by, although I hate NC/sampling and would rather have cc-by-sa instead as an alternative) AND allows filter by license well. The only other option is opengameart.org . I am also very glad that apparently most artists chose cc0 or cc-by
One problem I see is that people sometimes ignore licenses and re-sample sounds from here (or other sources) and then release them under incompatible terms.
1) What do you use Freesound for?
To find samples I can use to make music. Either synthetic waveforms, recorded instruments or ambiance sounds.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones?
I'm not active enough to have an answer.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
Recorder instruments and other musical sounds.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
Well organized, clear licensing.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
Making music. Mostly getting drum samples I can use as well as spoken word and acapella.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
There is. I especially enjoy hearing the music others have made with various different contributions, and putting my own back in.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Percussion samples, acapella
my own comments:
Honestly, I love this site, but the search interface is awful. Say for example, I want to be able to look at packs of percussion samples that have been added, in order of popularity. I go to to packs, sort by downloads, and it doesn't work. The one on top has only 200, which is clearly not the most popular pack on freesound.
And if I search in any other way, only the sounds themselves, rather than the packs will be listed: i search advanced for "percussion" in the pack name and i get individual sound results like "click 1 d" rather than "my sabian cymbals pack". I get some results in terms of pack names listed on the right, but they're not links that i can open in a new tab. I look at one of these packs, then use my back button, not sure what my search is now displaying, and end up starting from scratch.
Really, I'd love to comb the site individually for every snare I try, but it's just fiddly and i'd rather have them on my system first and choose later, because finding a pack i like gives me a "quality mark" and reduces the amount of second guessing, editing and so forth at my end.
nor is there any way, seemingly for packs to be rated or commented on as a whole ("the mic you've used is too noisy" "where's the high end" etc). and then when i finally do find a pack of high quality stuff i can keep, it turns out to have a more restrictive license, so i have to go right back to the start. why can't i just limit my whole search to CC0 in the first place?
i'd also like an easy way to filter search results between loops and individual one off samples.
/rant off.
1) Own, non-commercial projects (mostly for university / animation movies)
2) I am pretty new to the community and have not used the community features yet.
3) Cant answer - I have no specific interests, all sounds can be interesting to me (differs from project to project).
4) Didnt know /used the others yet, Im completely satisfied with freesound, so no need of other websites
1) Primarily for short film sound design, (Live action and digital), but occasionally for a small video game I might attempt to create, or even for a short song I might make with LMMS.
2) I do sense that there is a strong community spirit here on freesound, I believe most regular users wish to see freesound grow even more, not in just samples and fame, but in numbers and friends as well. There is a certain good feeling in being a member of a community where everyone is as passionate about good sound as you are.
3) I really keep an eye out for any sounds suitable for action film sound design, but as a sound designer/recorder myself, I can appreciate any beautifully recorded sound that pops out at me.
4) Definitely the community and content. While many other sites offer good sounds, way to often must you pay for 'credits' to buy sounds, or pay high fees for individual sounds themselves. And if they don't have fees, the sound is usually junk. The great thing about freesound is I have found samples here to be of the utmost quality and professionalism 95 percent of the time.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
Research on sound and consciousness (mind-brain-body interface). Audio production (FS represents both - pro quality sounds, and sonic materials that I can't record or create by myself). Changing my own way of thinking, and... taking some rest among others like me.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Yes, but this is not so directly. FS is like a playground, through which people can share their expressions, exchange thoughts, learn about the "psychology of sharing" (so to speak), expand their horizons; FS is clean - no "whatever files", no illegal content, but also - no limitations (server, lenght, quantity) in what you wish to do. So the common goal is somewhat related to natural, unshakable and self-sustainable existence and expansion, but without insistence; place that you can always return to, and immerse inward. So - yes, there is a sense of community. On that basis - any long or short term goals can be developed, but don't have to. But yes - FS has a very big multi-directional potential.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I think, generally sounds of nature, and then synth textures. Usually long tracks.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
I don't use them or simply are not aware of them; maybe they are cool, but no value for my work. Sharing is about the content but also about the "way of sharing". Freesound is unique; no advertising, no exchange expectations, no limitations, and vast database of sounds, including pro quality. Plus - the way how people interact. It's like choosing between well mainained library and dingy stall (-;
1. What do you use Freesound for?
As a sharer, I'm interested in getting sounds I've recorded or created over the years out there for others to use. As a downloader, I'm mostly using samples to create alerts and alarms for mobile devices, but also for sound effects for game modifications with my son.
2. Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones?
The community seems to be focused on quality sounds — not the usual "hey, look at me, I'm on the Internet now!" kind of nonsense that pollutes a lot of sharing sites. Also, this seems to be a community interested in sharing well-recorded and edited bits and pieces for others to do cool things with.
3. What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
Clean pings, tings, dings, clicks and ticks for making mobile device alarms. Realistic (not overblown) explosions, shots, hits and stuff that goes bang for game mod sound effects.
4. What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
It's about sound effects, not about finished music. There is a good focus on reusable "components". I don't find too many bass licks, drum lines or guitar rhythms that are too "specific" to be used.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...) I use it to download common sounds
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) I vote for sounds I download usually but thats the most i get involved with the community
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) common ones like the ticking sound from a watch
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) i don't really recall being at ccmixter but i've heard of it. I like this site because you type in what kinda sound you want and you get it results fast
1) What do you use Freesound for? I use Freesound for my Lego Stop Motion Animations which I post on YouTube.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? I hope to find all the sounds I need in the future...
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? I'm most interested in music/soundtrack sounds, medieval sounds, and city sounds.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? What's great about this site is that, there is literally THOUSANDS of sound fx/soundtracks.
1) What do you use Freesound for?
For sharing my sounds with others, looking for collaboration and promoting my commercial audio stuff
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesound user community? If so, which ones?
I have met many friendly users (mainly downloaders of my sounds) and have done some interesting projects. Rather no closer relations with other uploaders or forum users
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
I do not download, sometimes something can inspire me to create new sounds
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
It's free, but gives fun and many joy when someone gives you message with simple: Thank You!
