I use Freesound samples for researching sounds (sound analysis and synthesis, spatial audio) and for music and video production (non-commercial).

2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)

I think that, as in all communities, there are some members that are more "shy" (take me as an example) than others that are more "visible". There is a sense of community, but many people will pass by Freesound only looking for the samples they need. It's Ok, however. I don't think that a community will be made of rules and impositions - the will is the power that moves the world.

3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)

I'm very interested on sounds for film and music production. Voice and musical instruments recordings are also useful, once I'm interested on atomic decomposition, granular synthesis and musical information retrieval from atomic models of sound.

4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)

Freesound is pretty well organized and the quality of the samples is better than those available at most free sounds sites. CC licenses are very flexible and encouraging. Maybe the most important thing about Freesound is that there is a lot of cool people in the community.

There seem to be a lot of Freesound folks who do Foley and sound effects specifically for picture. I don't really use Freesound as a "community" but I love that I can contribute sounds.

We upload custom Foley cues. And we download Foley cues. Monsters, computers, footsteps...

Freesound specializes in sound effects, or at least that's the way I use it. I find that the effects on Freesound are the first "library" I go to when looking for a cut effect.

The simple answer, for all that questions , lays down in its core. IT IS FREESOUND. No some strict policy about how your sound should look like. As long as it is legal. SO, long live the freedom and FreeSoundOrg.

Its the the endpoint for excellent sounds - the biggest collection of worthwhile sounds .. takes hour to even come accross stuff so good elsewhere on the internet

I used freesound to download loops to play with Samplitude when I first bought it a couple of years ago. I had a lot of fun playing with the samples, they gave me a lot of joy and helped me learn. I also downloaded sound effects for my husband who does stop motion animation, a hobby that he does for fun. A great way for a grown man to build stuff, make a mess and play with action figures!

I'm not really sure, although it was exciting to see the new promo video and see the kind of projects that Freesound is involved in. Yes, there's definately a sense of community, although a little quiet sometimes, that's understandable with all the work you guys have been doing, there's usually someone around to answer questions and things going on in the forums. Long term goals I guess would be to make it even easier to provide sound resources to the world!

The great thing about freesound is that you never know what you're going to hear that might inspire some idea. I find things for music here, could be a kickass bassline or drum loop, instrument, or just a cool recording or sample that speaks to me and helps express something. Very good sound effects and field recordings which help bring hubby's hobby to life.
I recently rejoined freesound after being offline for a long while and wanted to give some love back. so I've recently been uploading the kind of loops I would have been stoked to play with two/three years ago - easily loopable synth and instrument stuff for music. I read with interest the comments on the tag experiment although i missed the survey, so I've tried to take more care when tagging my loops for music considering the amount of people looking for "real" sound effects.

I've only just joined Soundcloud recently, I thought it would be overwhelming or p me off because I don't really like social network sites, it's actually nice to have an outlet for your creativity and I love exploring and finding some really surprising music on there. Although I find soundlcoud to be a little clunky and slow sometimes it is awesome and I like it. Of course I still love freesound because it's the best - a no bullshit resource site with a heart and mind!

1. I use Freesound for a variety of things, SFX to be placed within music tracks that I either don't know how to make, or don't have the ability or time to do. I also use it for flim. Foley, sound mixing. ect. cinematic sounds. stuff like that.

2. sense of community is good. the troll level is kept at a minimum, which is very refreshing. Having spam all over the internet is annoying and it's nice to be able to have a clean, neat, organized, yet socially free, website that doesn't have annoying idiots posting crap all the time. the UI is easy to use. there is virtually no learning curve for the website. it's just here. available. i also like how you can add other tags to other sounds you didn't upload, which could be tags the uploader didn't think of, which, in return, helps others find the sounds they are looking for more easily.

3. My range of sound interest range quite a bit. it depends on the application. lately it's been a lot of Gun shots, Misc Gun SFX (reloading, handling, bullets dropping in different types of grounds.) I've also been looking at tons of different types of cinematic BOOMS, or glass breaking, or footsteps. nothing nobody can't record. ambient sounds are VERY important. I think the ambient library is lacking, quite a bit, partly because they are tough to do, and not many want to do that for free, but it could have some more uploaders contribute there- (and I'll try if I record anything that I record something professional enough to upload here)

4. That's a good question. First, It's focusing mostly on SFX, not music, or singer/songwriter promotions. it is focusing on the simple Foley of filmmaking and music recording. That is what I see Freesound, as a giant foley library. soundcloud is when you're bored and want to find a song you've never heard. I have little knowledge of the other websites, but I THINK CCmixter is the freesound of music. but I'm not sure. So I have no thoughts or words for those other sites.

all in all, The site is very complete, 4.5/5 would be my rating.

I just wish that you could rename your thread after posting. that is literally my ONLY complaint. and that's not even complain-worthy.

1) I mainly use it to share interesting things I have recorded. It is fun to see what people do with them, and to see which sounds are popular (which is incredibly hard to predict). I don't really download any sounds. I would really like to have a "continuous stream" feature which could just play all the results of a search, one after another. I listen to music a lot while I am working, it would be great to be able to listen to freesounds without having to click on something every minute or so.

2) I think we all share a passion for sound. Beyond that, there are about a dozen subgroups with different interests & goals.

3) I like a) long, interesting field recordings; b) field recordings of unusual, cool-sounding things; c) interesting sounds that have really good descriptions, which are like reading a good story - they transport you to that place; d) sounds of a historical nature, e.g. sounds that were common before 1920.

4) I only use Freesound and Soundcloud. I use Soundcloud because it is easy to include sounds on Facebook. But the paid version is way too expensive so I don't use it much. If you want Freesound to be more popular, you must integrate well with Facebook. Currently this isn't that great, and the sound quality in the preview is not good.

In my case I'm an animation student creating projects that tell stories. Sound is really critical in telling the story even if it's mostly a visual medium. I also have always sort of loved sound editing from an intuitive level so... I make projects for school, to learn, and to bring to life stories I love.

I admit I don't participate much community wise here... which is honestly sort of ridiculous. I have a sound library too... I really should be giving back to this site since it's helped me a ridiculous amount.

Mostly ones that are a bit tricky for me to get myself aka ambient noises of an environment that isn't easy for me to get to or weird things I don't know how to generate digitally. But I also tend to want the pieces as they are before editing and mixing and without other sounds in unless it makes sense. This place is awesome for that. I tend to love sound mixing myself so... this place really gives me the raw elements if you will, so I can start playing around with that and my own sounds together.

Pretty much what I described in question three. Yet I also find that this place is great because it focuses on sharing and helping each other just because 'Hey, we all need stuff. We can't always get that easily. Let's try and make it a bit easier on everyone.'
