A good idea, respectful with FS's core values.

I think a yearly donation of 10 Euros/$12 or so is entirely reasonable. I would add a button for EASY donation and a link nfor PayOPal donations. Personally, I only pay for oinlibe products using my Pal Pal credit account. That's my 2-cents.
Does this mean there is a possibility of Freesound closing down if donations don't come in?!

Thanks Klankbeeld!
Great suggestion.
I will be adding this to all my sounds.

Thank you very much for Freesound! I WILL make a donation though the arts council project that I am writing the soundtrack for. I need to ask them for it. But it will happen,'

Hi there,
First of all, why so hesitant and shy about making donations? Freesound absolutely deserves our donations. I had trouble finding your donation link! It should be on every page, at least in the footer. I just donated €50 now, which only amounts to €3.5 per year that I've had an account on this site.
Here's a thought: I noticed that the server speed is fairly slow, at least from my connection here in the southwest USA. Could you work out a way to offer donors better speeds by routing their previews and downloads through a content delivery network restricted to donors? This kind of reward would be very attractive to heavy users of the site, those that are most likely to make a donation. And it’s a very justifiable reward, as adding a CDN to your infrastructure represents a real change in expenses.
I too would donate; but I too distrust PayPal. (This makes it a problem donating to many worthy causes, not just Freesound.)
I also appreciate Freesound's community and philosophy. Thanks for that!

Thank you for the service you provide!
While I am new to the service, I discovered it through my research for a video/film making course I am currently taking.
In your description of sustainability, you propose that current audio donors NOT be targeted for monetary donation contributions because they already donate content. It would be my suggestion that ALL subscribers be included in email blasts that solicit donations. My reasons are base on the fact that, wile audio file donors contribute to the collective resource, there is an aspect of altruism attached to it. Some file donors (but perhaps, not all...) will see their creative works as filed in a repository as a permanent back up.
I am not proposing this theory as punitive, only that there may be a few whose purpose is this. That is perfectly acceptable.
My main point is... do not exclude asking certain groups for monetary donation, because they contribute in other ways. After all, non-profits ask for donations from their volunteers as they should. Don't pull a dedicated potential source of income from the table.
Best Regards,
Bob Phoenix - Donor
I'm down for pop-up ads and/or emails. I've only been singed up for a couple days but I can already see the sheer potential on this site-- plus it's FREE! (both in money and viruses, thank goodness for that) Honestly one of the most down-to-earth services I've ever encountered.
I have a couple of suggestions to help improve donation revenue:
1. Provide a link to donations from every page at the bottom. I had to click around for a while before I bothered with the home page and saw the donation link. It's not that the donation link isn't there, it's just that you want a link to be handy whenever someone considers donating. This is also a more low key way of doing things than pop-ups, which tend to turn people off, even when they are well-justified.
2. This site would receive more donations if it accepted crypto. It would be trivial to set up some (preferably hardware) wallet addresses to receive deposits and then just post those addresses on the donation page. You don't even need to bother with any crypto exchanges right away. Just wait until the donations in a particular crypto amount to something, or don't bother converting to fiat at all. As far as which crypto's to accept, just start at the top on coinmarketcap.com and work your way down as far as you feel like going.
Keep up the good work!
Honestly I wouldn't mind ads in the margins that much if it helped to keep this amazing site active, as long as it didn't get out of hand. Though many sites that do that end up with the fake download pop-ups, so you could hurt your reputation quick if you weren't careful about which ad service you use.

Actually, I think you mean to say two Euros... LOL!!!
As you said, 10 Euros a year is extremely reasonable for access to the amount of content that is available here.

It is nearly 4 years later since this thread was started and I don't see a donate link on the website... am I missing something? I would love to give a one time donation for a handful of sounds vs paying some subscription service that is all the trend these days.
Hi BensTechLab,
There's a donate link in the front page, right below the t-shirts box. In the new UI we're working on the donate button will be more present

Let's copy and past this link address on every post in the forum... Maybe then the word will get out!
All it takes is 2 euros a month and Freesound can have an audio called... "We're In The Money..."
Thank freesound, This is a great channel for me to find my favorite music.I hope to have more donate for you.
I absolutely support this.
I have added the link to the donation page to my page and to the description of each sound but I think, this way donations are rarely done. Seeing a meaningful, friendly popup after someone downloaded a sound would make sense in my opinion.
Wikipedia runs at least twice a year huge donation campaings. I am not sure how successful they are but maybe you already hav some data about it.
As mentioned by someone earlier I would also suggest pages for regular support like Patreon (mixxter is there btw) or Steady, as an additional way to receive some constant income. Maybe you guys can contact the team at mixxter and ask them about their experiences with Patreon.
