For years, I've been fascinated with the theoretical possibilities of binaural, but often disappointed in the reality of it.
One problem is the head related transfer function. Since everyone's head and pinnae are different, it stands to reason that there is no "one size fits all" HRTF. So I embarked on a project to compare various HRTFs as closely as possible. The result is a sound pack I just uploaded, HRTF Comparison.
I would be interested to hear other Freesounders impressions and preferences of these sounds and how you feel they influence your perception of the recording.
There are 13 renderings of a single recording. Each rendering uses a different HRTF using Harpex, but all other parameters were kept the as as much as possible. Three of the HTRFs were provided by Harpex. The other ten were chosen at random from a set of 105 HRTF SOFA files made available by the Advanced Acoustic Information Systems Laboratory, Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University. Many thanks to this group for making these available. Of course, there are other datasets of HRTFs available (as SOFA files), but I had stuck with one provider to minimize differences in their methodology.
