You can always just get a XLS->TRS adapter/cable...
however handy as it is.. I find the price not 'that' attractive....

There where more recorders like this on the AES...
there was one called Flash or something.. I lost he flyer...
it had a XLR input with phantom, strong case. it recorded on smart media i think.
The price was about the same..

ib et your thinking about the Marantz PMD series. perhaps a 660 or a 670 (which is a bit more expensive).
The hku bought one (670) and imho its crap, UI sucks and the quality is "soso" if your optimistic....

Most people don't read the manual unfortunately--the manual suggests using a condenser mic and this results in WAY better sound quality on the PMD-660.

this is really cool, i was waiting to find out about this for months. the new minidiscs by sony also look nice but i'd rather have this m-audio baby

hhm, that would totally depend on the condenser microphone you use. There are a shitload of crap assed conderser mikes out there. Also sound quality isnt determined by the type of microphone but by their application in the right situation.
If your suggestion that using a condenser on a PMD-670, which is the model that i was talking about, will make it sound less turdlike then your wrong. The mike-pre's add quite a bit of noise which render them useless in quiet enviroments.
Oh and btw, I did use it with a condenser microphone (a Sennheiser MKH-415T to be exact, not the worst mike in the world...)

I always wondered why people never mention products as the Zoom ps02 or PS04 (or similar Korg/Tacam) products as fieldrecorders .... OK, they are in fact small multitrackers , but for the rest they have a lot of the spec's of MS and the likes

That was the recorder i saw on the AES. (i talked about it in an earlyer post) It's a really nice recorder XLR + pre-amp and different formats for recording... best of all it felt really stirdy... a strong metal case.
However i think the RS232 port should be replaced by a faster firewire or usb2 interface...

For the interested among you

the trs connectors double as mic inputs (balanced) with 48v
and you get a free stereo mic with it in an odd T kind of shape
and it is listed $499 so that is around €400,-

Do you mean the new 24/96 flash tracker?

I have ordered one as I dont think that it is out yet. I will use it essentially for storage via Grace Design V3 as I dont think the preamps could be up to much.

if you wouldn't mind, could you post about it when you get it please.
Even if you don't use it for recording, a report about the general
feel of it, whether it is robust and feels sturdy, etc, would be most

I think the real advantage of this unit is to record to as a storage device via the digital input from whatever portable preamp you like. Then you can get 24/96 sound on an incredibly portable unit.

Also, if you buy direct from the US the price is much less eg about 360 US or so.
