Yes cardioids reject a lot of sound from behind and some from the sides, pointing upwards means that they are not pointing at a sound source behind the desired sound, birds, traffic etc.

Thanks for explaining how you did the recording. So, a flat roof - so out doors then. How did you manage to block out background noise? Or does this kind of mic naturally avoid background noise by being directional?

Yes I would recommend cardioid XY stereo for this sort of sound. I did this one by standing on top of a flat roof, mics on the ground pointing up, rotating the rope vertically like a propeller.

Thanks. I have tried so hard to record my own whooshes but only with a blue mikey microphone which is omni directional so seems to have too much background noise. I see you use a Rode NT-4. I presume that is the mike to have for this sort of recording?
